Ahmedabad: Income Tax officer booked for Rs 30 lakh bribe

According to ACB officers, they received a complaint from a builder alleging that the I-T officer had been demanding money from him and other builders to avoid being slapped with huge penalties. "The I-T officer and his team raided the premises of several builders in the city.

He scrutinized the seized documents before drawing up a report and told the builder to pay a bribe if he wanted to avoid paying a penalty," said an ACB officer, adding: "The officer's constant demands for money led the builder to us."

Another ACB officer said, "The I-T officer used an angadia firm for delivery of the bribe. When he asked the builder to pay Rs 30 lakh, we arranged for the angadia employee to hand over marked notes. However, by the time the courier reached the I-T office, the officer had been alerted and soon left the office." ACB officers said they found incriminating documents in the office.
