Views about Career Area

I am a Chartered Accountant qualified in Nov 2020. During my articleship which i did in a fairly big firm i got exposed to many Risk Advisory services such as Internal audit , Due diligence etc because of which My interest and passion is towards internal audit/Due diligence / Risk Advisory services and this is what I want to pursue as my career option.

So my question is as a career option in terms of growth say 5 years down the line how do you see "Risk Advisory services " - Internal audits etc ? Will it be a good decision to choose Internal Audits over statutory audits ?

Now, keeping this as my area of interest i wanted to know should I join an audit firm first , take some diverse exposure and then get into corporate or join the corporates immediately ?

How will the growth prospects be in a corporate with this area of my interest ?

Hey Karan! Great question and congrats on your CA qualification. Here’s my take on your career thoughts about Risk Advisory/Internal Audit:

Growth Potential of Risk Advisory/Internal Audit

  • High Demand: With increasing regulatory scrutiny, compliance needs, and emphasis on corporate governance, Risk Advisory and Internal Audit are booming areas.

  • Future Focus: Companies and regulators are prioritizing risk management, fraud prevention, and internal controls more than ever. So the scope and importance of these roles will keep growing.

  • Diverse Exposure: You get exposure across business functions, industries, and even geographies. It’s not just number-crunching but strategic risk evaluation.

  • Technology Integration: With data analytics, AI, and continuous auditing tools, this area is evolving rapidly, which is exciting for professionals who want to stay updated.

Internal Audit vs Statutory Audit

  • Internal Audit: More advisory, proactive, and aligned with business strategy. You get to work on risk frameworks, controls, and process improvements.

  • Statutory Audit: Compliance and regulatory focus, more rule-based, and usually a bit routine once you gain experience.

  • Which to Choose? If your passion lies in understanding and improving business risks, internal audit is more rewarding and impactful in the long term.

Should You Join a Firm First or Corporate Directly?

  • Join a Firm First:

    • You get broad and diverse industry exposure.

    • Learn multiple aspects of business, different audit methodologies, and risk frameworks.

    • Opportunity to work with senior clients and sharpen your technical skills.

  • Join Corporate Directly:

    • You can start specializing early.

    • Corporate jobs may provide better work-life balance.

    • Career growth can be good but sometimes slower without the audit firm experience.

Growth in Corporate with Risk Advisory/Internal Audit Focus

  • You can climb the ladder to positions like Head of Internal Audit, Chief Risk Officer, Compliance Head, or even CFO with relevant experience.

  • Companies increasingly seek internal auditors with CA and risk advisory expertise.

  • Growth is promising if you keep upgrading skills like data analytics, regulatory knowledge, and leadership.

Summary:
If you love risk advisory/internal audit, it’s a smart and future-proof choice. Starting in a good audit/risk advisory firm will build a strong foundation, then you can move to corporate for specialization and leadership roles.
