Tax exemption for medical surgery

686 views 3 replies

If a tax payer has spent on surgery of self (or dependant), is the amount eligible for Tax relief.

I have spent more than 50,000 rupees on self surgery (orthopaedic) due to dislocated fracture. Can anyone please guide me whether this amount is eligible for Tax benefits. The expenses are in the same financial year and original bills are present. I was not having any insurance.

Thanks in Advance

No, you cannot claim exemption for this expenditure.  You can claim if you pay medical premium U/s 80D.  You cannot claim expenses other than Handicapped or specified treatment U/s 80DD & 80DDB respectively
