Is it necessary for a sole prprieter to get registered for a TAN no. If the sole proprieter is not registered will he be liable for any penalty.

who will apply to PAN?
All those persons who are required to deduct tax at source or collect tax at source on behalf of Income Tax Department are required to apply for and obtain TAN.
So if you are liabile to deduct ot collect tax you need to register for TAN ,
it will cost around 100-150 i guess
