Hey Tapas! Sounds like you’re facing an issue with a defective return (DR) notice under Section 139(9), and the department is saying they haven’t received your reply (e-proceeding number missing). Here’s what you can do:

What is Section 139(9) about?

  • It deals with defective income tax returns.

  • The department issues a notice if your return is incomplete or has errors.

  • You are supposed to respond within 15 days with the required information or correction.

  • If you fail, the return can be treated as invalid.

Your issue:

  • You replied to the defective return notice.

  • But the IT Dept claims they didn’t get your response (no e-proceeding number recorded).

  • This can happen due to technical glitches or incorrect submission.

What to do next?

  1. Check Acknowledgment:

    • Log in to your e-filing account and check if your reply to the defective return was successfully submitted and acknowledged.

    • Download and save the acknowledgment receipt or e-proceeding number as proof.

  2. Resubmit or Re-upload Reply:

    • If no acknowledgment is available, try resubmitting the reply to the defective return through the e-filing portal.

    • Ensure you complete all steps until you get a confirmation or e-proceeding number.

  3. Contact IT Department:

    • Raise a grievance on the Income Tax e-filing portal under “Help & Support” → “Grievance” about non-receipt of your reply.

    • Provide proof of your submission if available.

  4. Call Helpdesk:

    • Call the Income Tax e-filing helpline to check the status and report the issue.

  5. Visit Assessing Officer:

    • If issue persists, consider visiting your Assessing Officer (AO) or send a written communication explaining the issue with proof of your submission attempts.

Important:

  • Don’t ignore the notice or delay further — keep proof of every submission and communication.

  • Acting proactively prevents the return from being treated as invalid.
