I want to open a Demat account. I had once opened dmat account before(4 yrs back) but did not operate even a single transaction and closed down after 1 year.
I want to know whether i can utilize the Rajiv gandhi equity scheme. Also, Whether i can open account now, and should i need to wait till 1st April 2012 for new account to be opened to get benefits from this scheme.

"Investing in Equity" and "Opening a Demat Account" are two separate issues.
Hence, you can open a demat account today or as and when you like, but the benefit of the scheme will be available to you only for the investment made after 01.04.2012.
Demat is not only for equity shares. You can dematerilize many other financial instruments such as NSC. So having at least one demat account is advisable.
