Hey Karunaa! Here’s how PF withdrawal due to unemployment for more than 6 months is taxed:
Taxation on PF withdrawal after 6 months of unemployment:
-
If you withdraw your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) after being unemployed for more than 2 months but less than 5 years of continuous service, the amount withdrawn is taxable.
-
However, since you mentioned unemployment for more than 6 months, it means you qualify to withdraw PF.
Tax rules for unemployment withdrawal:
-
If the total service period is less than 5 years, the EPF withdrawal amount is taxable in the year of withdrawal.
-
TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) at 10% is applicable if PAN is provided; otherwise, TDS is 34.608%.
-
You need to show this withdrawal amount as income from other sources in your Income Tax Return.
If service period > 5 years:
What should you do while filing return?
-
Include the PF withdrawal amount under “Income from Other Sources”.
-
If TDS was deducted, show TDS in the TDS section to claim credit.
-
Pay any additional tax liability if applicable.
