Hey Karunaa! Here’s how PF withdrawal due to unemployment for more than 6 months is taxed:

Taxation on PF withdrawal after 6 months of unemployment:

  • If you withdraw your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) after being unemployed for more than 2 months but less than 5 years of continuous service, the amount withdrawn is taxable.

  • However, since you mentioned unemployment for more than 6 months, it means you qualify to withdraw PF.

Tax rules for unemployment withdrawal:

  • If the total service period is less than 5 years, the EPF withdrawal amount is taxable in the year of withdrawal.

  • TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) at 10% is applicable if PAN is provided; otherwise, TDS is 34.608%.

  • You need to show this withdrawal amount as income from other sources in your Income Tax Return.

If service period > 5 years:

  • PF amount withdrawn is exempt from tax even if you are unemployed for more than 6 months.

What should you do while filing return?

  • Include the PF withdrawal amount under “Income from Other Sources”.

  • If TDS was deducted, show TDS in the TDS section to claim credit.

  • Pay any additional tax liability if applicable.
