In my case I received notice for this difference of Rs 19200 + Rs 2500 = Rs 21700.
It seems that simply declaring the 'Income under the Head Salaries' from Form 16 is stopped now at CPC and they are now trying to match total 26AS income with total income reflecting on ITR.
Yet, the biggest mistake for AY 2017-18 was it was not mandatory to provide breakup of all allowances (exempt and non exempt). Moreover, the ITR forms are not structured well so as to help taxpayers with respect to their Form 16.
Eg the tax return forms of USA are very simple and always refer to Form W2 and the boxes within the Form W2 which is Form 16 of the USA. The USA return forms directly mention by writing the box number of W2. Instructions of filling USA Tax return forms are running into several pages.
This is missing in our ITR forms, no mention of any row of Form 16 is mentioned on ITR. It has been done on purpose I believe.
