Long Term Capital Gains Tax on sale of UTI MEPUS

A person sold units of UTI MEPUS in 2023. The same was bought in 2003. The UTI sent the CG statement which shows the acutal purchase price in 2003, the grandfathered value as at 2018 and sale price and shows the applicable CG earned. However the statement does not indicate the ISIN number of the scheme. On enquiry the UTI has replied vide email that this scheme does not have ISIN as it is not traded in secondary market.
How can the LTCG in this case be reported. As this is an equity oriented scheme (the name itself says Master Equity Plan Unit Scheme) we decided to report in Sch 112A of the CG section in ITR 2. However, as there is no ISIN we are unable to report the same.

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses the complexities of reporting Long Term Capital Gains Tax (LTCG) for units of UTI MEPUS purchased in 2003 and sold in 2023. A key issue is the absence of an ISIN for this scheme, which typically is required for reporting equity-oriented funds in Schedule 112A of the ITR. The consensus is that UTI MEPUS is a debt-oriented fund, meaning gains should be reported in Schedule CG under 'Other Capital Assets', where an ISIN is not needed. The discussion also touches upon reporting gains from an Edelweiss ETF, clarifying that indexation benefits apply to debt funds held for over 36 months when taxed at 20%.

For UTI-Master Equity Plan, ISIN is INF123BSE162
Wow Dhirajlalji!! How did you get this number? I was unable to get it though I tried UTI website and other sources for finding ISIN. Even UTI themself advised me in writing by mail that this scheme does not have ISIN! Please let me know how to find ISIN numbers in future so that I do not disturb you further. Thanks again!
This is very rare case. Actually BSE allotted this number for trading this units on their platform. Hope such requirement may not arise again. Good Luck...
Ok Thanks. Actually I was confused because I got a reply from UTI MF (\and also from Kfin technology that this scheme does not have ISIN because its not traded in secondary market and it is not available for dematerialization. Anyway thanks
One more doubt. I had invested in an ETF of Edelweiss MF (BHARATBOND0423) at the time of their issue on 26th Dec 2019. The same was redeemed on maturity in April 2023 automatically in my ICICI Direct Demat account. I got a statement of CG from them wherein they have given purchase and sale value as same amount. In actual fact, the redemption amount (as per credit in my bank statement) was 364000 while purchase was 300000. Where and how do I show this transaction?
Schedule CG.... Sold after 3 years from the date of investment: Gains are taxed at the rate of 20% after providing the benefit of inflation indexation. (as investment is made before 1 April 2023)
Where in Sch CG - obviously not Sch 112A which is only for equity funds? I think this is a debt fund (ETF) as it had specified date of maturity. So where we enter LT Capital gains on debt funds redemption?
Tab B .. 3 ....
Sorry didn't understand quite what you meant? Did you mean the 3rd line item in the CG Schedule in ITR 2 - which reads 'Equity share in a company or unit of equity oriented MF --- on which STT is paid' - I may clarify that no STT was applicable in this case either on purchase or redemption. Its an ETF issue of Edelweiss Mutual Fund. Or can I put it in the 4th item that reads 'Bonds or debentures' - only in this case the entire profit becomes CG as there is no indexation provision.

Sorry, as you purchased it before amendment, so  Schedule CG ,,, Tab B10 .. A(ii) ...

Just to confirm Tab B10 .. A(ii) ...in the CG Schedule says 'Full value of consideration in respect of assets other than unquoted shares' - am I right? And does this mean that the full profit (Sale value minus purchase cost) is LT CG? In other words no indexation benefit is applicable?

A (ii) sale value

B (i) Cost of acquisition with indexation

C Balance (10aiii - biv)

UTI MEPUS is a debt-oriented fund, so the gains are NOT reported in Schedule 112A (which requires ISIN for equity-oriented funds). They go in Schedule CG under Other Capital Assets. ISIN is not required there.

For the tax computation:
- Cost of Acquisition: use the grandfathered value as of Jan 31, 2018 if it is higher than the actual 2003 purchase price. Grandfathering for equity-oriented schemes (not debt) uses the Jan 31, 2018 FMV. For debt funds like MEPUS, use actual cost with indexation.
- Holding period: from 2003 to 2023 = well over 36 months. Qualifies as Long Term.
- Tax rate for FY 2022-23 (AY 2023-24): 20% with indexation benefit.

Use the UTI statement figures directly. The portal accepts them without ISIN in Schedule CG Other Assets section.
