Limit under Section 80D for the AY 2019-20

I and my wife are senior citizens. I have paid Rs. 17237 towards Mediclaim , Rs. 32403 towards medicines and Rs. 5000 for diagnostic tests thus totaling Rs. 54640. Is not all this admissible under Section 80 D ? The IT department  says only Rs. 50000 is admissible.

Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies the deduction limit under Section 80D for senior citizens for Assessment Year 2019-20. Despite paying for mediclaim, medicines, and diagnostic tests, the total admissible deduction is capped at Rs. 50,000. The IT department correctly states that diagnostic test expenses are included within this overall limit and do not qualify for a separate additional deduction.

Yes, the deduction would be limited to Rs. 50,000/- only. Section 80D specifies that the limit is inclusive of medical expenditure

It will be limited to 50000/- only because 5000/- for diagnostic is included in maximum limit of 50000/-. it's not a seperate additional limit.

Thanks a lot, Mr. Kiran and Mr. Pravin.
