stating that chartered accountants face a major challenge from MBAs, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla today said there is strong need to expand the curriculum of CA courses beyond accounting.

“CAs today face top challenge from MBAs who are good at communication skills, know finance and economy better,” he said while addressing the two-day ‘All India Conference of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)’ here.

Seeking steps to re-orient the curriculum for CA courses, Birla said having knowledge only in accounting would not help the present day CAs to face the challenges.

“MBAs have an edge over CAs in many fields as the Indian economy is much closer to the world economy now. As merger and acquisition are order of the day, CAs have big roles to play,” he said.

Stating that the employers want new CAs to become productive from day one, Birla suggested the CAs to take leadership by virtue of their quality and have knowledge over other matters besides accounting.

Birla, a chartered accountant and an MBA himself, is not happy over the rate of pass percentage of CAs. “The pass percentage during our time was 4 per cent. Now it is 17 per cent. The pass ratio should be 10 per cent,” he said, emphasising on the need for better products.

Kind of bogus story...........mr birla questions about pass %, at ICAI conference!!!!! Ha ha

Kumar himself a distinguished CA himself as also with an MBA from LSE. i agree with him, as CAs need to upgrade better with high level economics as also laws, just understanding IT laws alone will not be helpful as IT laws are some administrative thought process of finance ministries but undergo many illegal modifications springing in every year so Nani Palkivala said IT laws are just disgraceful to nation, though Nani himself a star IT Advocate though his basic degree was English Literature. So it means tax laws can be tackled  by serious studies on tax laws in term of constitutional laws, accounting is one area that is not everyting but CAs just specialize in Taxation while in other aspects they indeed have to equip. Thus i agree with Kumar.

MBAs are inded okay as far as communication is concerned in India but their knowledge skills in other areas yet to be upgraded, so they too lose their grounds. True CAs are need to perform from day one that is the expectation by all employers.

I will add SAS of government of India in both commercial as also in public accounting is better grounded and therefore see CAG arrests govt illegal moves is it not that every one of you have read the media.

CAG really does research every day but that is not true with any other accountants though they may be more glorified than government auditors, after all government auditors audit paras are indeed tough to be answered by any governments or CAs and like their kind.MBAs are no level with govt auditors who passed SAS examinations invariably held with the aid of books!

So do not be just get over rated by your ego centrics our friends CAs that humilty will help you better to acquire better expertise.

Many a time CAs representing in tax tribunals is not very great and that is the reason why corporate hire other Advocates part from CA turned advocates from other faculties too, is it not. All these i mention here just not to underrate a CA but CAs today need to introspect on their own dept of expertise. this i say as indepedent director of some publiuc limited companies and looking into corporate affairs, being once a senior management consultant /advisor with 45 years of backing of experience as also as a senior lawyer at high courts and senior supreme court counsel! please do not misread me as i am only just guide young bedding CAs as i really admire your hard work in accounting processes and good study but once you equip with other necessary talents or skills you may out shine tks n regds. dr g balakrishnan
