Jurisdiction and assessing officer?

ITR 10074 views 11 replies

Despite the TDS deduction showing in 26AS, it has not been acknowledged in my assessment. Rectification request and refiled return has been dismissed.

Is it a good idea to meet the assessing officer in person and submit a written request?

Secondly, how do I locate him/ her?

(the IT Dept. site gives the jurisdiction/ how does one locate the address/contact details?)

Thirdly, I stay in a different city from the one I got my PAN issued from. Where must have the return been assessed? In the city I live in or the city where my PAN was issued?

Thanks.

The A.O. who is shown in the My Jurisdiction tab under the My Account head of your User ID will be your Assessing Officer. You can search the website quoting the number of the A.O. and then check the info of him.

In cases where there is a dispute between 26AS and intimation sent by A.O. then you can meet the A.O. in person and show him your case.

You mention: "You can search the website quoting the number of the A.O. and then check the info of him." But how do we do this? Can you plesse send link for which website and where to enter the query? I have had this problem too and cannot find any way to get the address/contact details, so your help would be very much appreciated.

One can get the Juridiction on the IT website but not the contact details of the Assessing Officer. I am surprised no one on the forum has been able to lend this basic information .....

It is not surprising that no one on this forum can provide this basic information, because Income Tax Department makes it so difficult to get this information. Instead of helping the public they want to make it so complex and difficult to increase their power. Where is the sense of public service in IT department?

Twisted work, twisted tales, twisted lives ..... not just ours, theirs as well.

Why you can't rectify your return?

Here is the only way I have found to get the contact info for an Assessing Officer, but it is very difficult, tedious and confusing and you cannot always find your AO.

Go to this site: https://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/home.asp

At the bottom left click on your city under Visit Field Offices. On the next page that opens, click on Directory on the top left.

Now you get a list of buildings. You have to go through each building and try to find your AO, if you find the AO in that building then at least you have the address. This is very difficult, sometimes it is impossible to find the AO in any building (especially in Mumbai which has so many) since the naming terminology is not consistent. Also, phone numbers are not always given (and even if you find one and call no one answers!).

If someone has a better way they are kindly requested to post here.

Thanks Peter. Works alright, unless the data is dated.

Jurisdiction wise data ..... I think it was last updated in 2005!

Now we know how our CAs hide !  ;-P

KJS, which data are you referring to -- the AO addresses? If so, why do you think it was last updated in 2005 -- did you see that somewhere?

It appears that there is some additional data now showing on the IT website for Jurisdiction AO for PAN.

At this website: https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/common.do?screen=jurisdiction  it now shows the following (personal data replaced)

Jurisdiction Details for XXXXXXXXXX

   First Name

NNNNNN

   Middle Name

   Surname

SSSSSSSS

 Area Code

MUM

       AO Type

W

   Range Code

23

   AO Number

9

   Jurisdiction

ITO WD 26(2)-4 (C) MUM

   Building

CHARNI ROAD,MUMBAI

The new items appear to be the Jurisdiction and Building. This seems like progress! However, I don’t understand the following, so if anyone can comment it would be great:

  1. If Range is 23 and AO Number 9, why is the Jurisdiction say WD 26(2)-4 C ? What is the correspondence?
  2. I wish they would show the full address and phone number rather than just Building name. Does anyone know how to request IT Department to provide full information here?
  3. I went to the website  www.incometaxindia.gov.in and at the bottom left searched for the field offices in Mumbai, went to the Directory tab and found the one in Charni Road and saw the full address  as below:

MAHARASHTRA-MUMBAI >> CHARNI ROAD

Name

CHARNI ROAD

Address

K G MITTAL BLDG.

City

MUMBAI

Phone

  (PBX)

In the list of officers I found:

610

 ITO WARD 26(2)-4, MUMBAI

22818066

364

So, my question is:

Is ITO WARD 26(2)-4 [without a C at the end] same as ITO WD 26(2) -4 (C) [with the C at the end}. This might seem like a trivial question, but with IT dept one never knows. I did not find any officer in Charni Road whose designation matched exactly the one show in the Jurisdiction screen.

Ultimately, I am not confident if any of this data can be trusted, since in one case when I know the officer is in Scindia House the Building is given as Aayaka Bhavan!

So, any comments and suggestions/help are most welcome. Hopefully one day IT department will actually provide useful and accurate information to help the public.

Has someone seen the new website lately?

The address field has disappeared again !
