Hello,

I have just accessed my father's account in I-T E-filing website and found that it is showing an outstanding demand of Rs. 12000 for AY 2008-09. During that time IT were filed manually. Since the case is very old, we do not have any records (BSR, Challan, etc.) to show that the amount had been paid. We only have a tax calculation sheet where it is mentioned that the amount was paid (u/s 140A) and balance was nil.

Is there any way to verify that the amount remains unpaid?

This demand identification no. starts with 2011, so I assume that it was created in 2011.

Pls. suggest how can we take this forward?

We know how bad the I-T Department's Record keeping is. Very recently I also received such demand. But lucklily I found the receipt and responded to them.

1) If you know which bank and branch then you will know BSR code

2) Goto https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/

3) it is very easy to blame IT dept. but please rememberthat your record keeping also is not upto the mark

4) One should keep all IT records.  Dept can come up with enquiry any time

5) All Investment made , Tax paid, Returns filed, Refunds received should be neatly compiled and kept.
