I know that money sent to spouse is exempt from income tax. is this limited to only spouse or does it extend to live-in relationships or girlfriend as well?

Girlfriend is not covered by the definition of relative defined under section 56(2), hence any amount in excess of rs 50,000 in a fy shall be taxed.
