Income Tax in India for NRI on Income from Outsourcing services abroad

Tax queries 294 views 1 replies

Myself and my wife are NRI's based in Middle East where earnings are non-taxable. I transfer my savings to India in my NRE Bank Account (my wife being joint holder). I do file ITR for earnings in India. My wife does not have any earnings, so she does not file ITR.

Now my wife intends to start ONLINE outsourcing engineering services (from Middle East as NRI) for clients in USA.

My question is if she can ask her clients to transfer the fee directly into our joint NRE account in India or does she need to open a separate NRE account. She has PAN Card but she does not file ITR as she did not have source of income so far. Is there any additional tax issues related to such business.

Thanks

It is generally permissible for an NRI to receive foreign exchange in their NRE (Non-Resident External) account in India. This account is specifically designed to hold funds in foreign currency.

Income earned by an NRI for services provided outside India is typically not taxable in India. However, tax laws can be complex, and it's advisable to consult with a tax professional to understand the specific implications of your wife's situation.
