ICICI Pru Signature Withdrawal Section 10(10D)

Hello,

I've got the Icici Pru Signature policy back in June 2019, paid for 5 years premium and now eligible for surrender or patial withdrawal. The agent told me it will be tax free money under section 10(10D), as it is meeting the required criterias. My question is, I do not have any income this year other than withdrawal amount(either full or partial) from this ICICI Pru Signature policy, so, just wondering do I still have to file tax return even I don't have any other income for this tax year?

Appreciate your help in advance for this regards.

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses whether an individual needs to file a tax return after withdrawing funds from an ICICI Pru Signature policy, even if the withdrawal is tax-free under Section 10(10D). The consensus is that it's advisable to file a Nil return if the aggregate income, including exempt amounts, crosses the threshold. It's also confirmed that past non-filing of returns with zero income should not cause issues, and the withdrawal amount can be declared as exempt income in the ITR.

Yes, if aggregate income including the exempt income crosses the thrashold limit, better to file nil return to avoid any future queries from ITD.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I've no income since last 5-6 years and due to that I'd not filed ITR, just wanted to see if I file ITR now after 5-6 with 0 income, would it not cause issue from ITD for the last 5-6 years of no filing even had 0 income? Also just wanted to check, is there any place in the ITR where we can disclose policy withdrawal amount and then mention whole amount as Sec 10(10D) to make it 0 income again or its just file 0 income ITR & no place to mention policy withdrawal amount on ITR?

Appreciate your input on this in advance.

Always advisable to file ITR may be with nil tax liability.

No problem would arise if you file return for current FY, even when you had not filed return earlier.

You can declare the maturity proceeds in Schedule 'Exempt Income' in ITR [sub sec. 10(10D)].

Good Luck.

Thank you so much for your help. Much appreciated.

You are welcome.
