Hra exempt deduction procedure

Hi

Salary 350000 pa. 5% tax slab. 5000 IT payae plus 4% cess on it gives 5200 tax payable on salary. HRA exempt for non metro rent is 30000 pa and east of the three is 1333 per month.

Can I take this hra exempt amount from income tax payable amount? 5200-1333= 3866 tax payable?

Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies that HRA exemption reduces your taxable income, not your tax payable amount directly. While HRA exemption lowers the total income on which tax is calculated, it cannot be directly subtracted from the tax amount itself. The correct procedure involves deducting the eligible HRA exemption from the HRA component of your salary, which in turn reduces your overall taxable salary.

HRA exemption can't be deducted from tax payable of 5200/-
