Group discussion - just participate

These days, Group Discussion (GD) has become an important tool for filtering candidates. The simple rule for candidates can be summarised as -

1. Speak but Speak sense - Remember it is a GD, you need to participate, in other words, Speak up. If you dont, you are out. Keep in Mind to speak in line with the topic of discussion and not something tangent to the topic.

2. Dont Fight - You are no doubt competiting with the rest of group, but dont get into fighting mode. It would create chaos and you would get negative marks. If you want to counter opinion of any other participant, do it politely.

3. Contribute - You may find that someone has pitched in with a really good point. If you can add something to what has already been said, dont hesitate.

4. Be a starter - If you are comfortable with the topic, you may take the lead to start the discussion.

5. Take notes - It is important to take notes during the discussion - You might be asked to summarise at the end of discussions.

Yes sir, the points highlighted by you are all essential to do well in a Group discussion. The key to success is to be a good listener and then put forth your point in a logical sequence in order make the discussion more interesting.

Participation is very vital, to assess the strengths and weaknesses within you.

Thanks for sharing vital inputs as to how to perform in a GD.

Read, Read and Read :

Since participation in Group Discussion is vital for a candidates success and one must have adequate knowledge regarding various topics/areas, it is essential that one must read a lot.

Now the question arises, what to read?

Read news papers (one business paper and one general paper). My personal suggestion is The Hindu and The Economic Times - The Hindu for language and Content and ET for in-depth knowledge of Commerce, Business, Industry and Economy. Also read a business magazine (Business World, Business Today, Outlook Business)

Make sure you read the editorials section dailly. In 365 days you would cover more than 2000 topics. With every reading you will get new ideas which could be a vital input for preparation. This would assist you in interviews as well.

You can access immense knowledge material, news, opinions at a click.Google is a power tool and so is Wikipedia. Use these resources. Dont wait. Utilise the time till your results to sharpen your skills.

You never know the topic in GD could be Modi, Advani, US $, Corruption, Euro Zone Crisis and what not. If you dont keep yourself updated, somebody else will encash the opportunity.

Yes, one must be vigilant and watch out for events and facts occurring around us. In addition, the knowledge, which we gain, will definitely help us at some point in time in our life.

One has to be watchful like a hawk to search and retain information and utilize them at appropriate forum.

Therefore, the importance of professional journals of CA / CS / CWA is essential along with the treasure of information and knowledge shared in an interactive platform like CCI.

No Guesswork

While participating in GD dont put across wrong facts/statements. Strictly no guesswork. There might be somebody else in the group who might be aware of the fact and your point would be countered.

Example -

The topic of GD is "How to overcome liquidity problems in a company"

Some one may say that Charging higher depreciation in books would reduce tax liability whereas the depreciation as per taxation would not change.

Keep it Simple

Never use high vocabulary or Technical terms which others might not understand. Even the observer might not understand in some cases. Use simple English which could be understood by all. You are with a different set of people and it is important that you match the frequency of your group.

Yes a good communicator is successful in his or her mission only when the message which he or she intends to convey is understood by the receipient and reciprocated.

Using techinal jargons to a naive audience is a complete no no, unless you wish to elaborate on the usage of those terminology to make your audience understand.

Try to keep your discussion lively with simple language which is effective.

Once the topic is given to you, give some thought in understanding it from all dimensions possible. At times a topic might involve speaking for or against or both. In such cases you must be able to think from both the angles. Jot down what ever comes to your mind in the preparation time given. Sometimes topics might be quite emotional (like whether Sachin should retire, Terrorism etc). In such cases maintain balance in what you say. It is not advisable to move to one extreme of what is being discussed.
