Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies the tax implications of receiving gifts from an NRI sister. Gifts from a sister, whether resident or NRI, are generally exempt from tax under Section 56(2) of the IT Act. While not mandatory, it's advisable to document gifts with a gift deed for future reference and to declare exempted income in your ITR to avoid potential queries, especially concerning remittances.

Gift from sister (be Resident or NRI) is exempt u/s. 56(2) of IT act. Just make gift deed for future reference.

Thank you sir for reply.

Is it mandatory to show the amount under exempted income while filling itr.

Being remittance inward, chances of query raised being high; its advisable. Otherwise it need not be.
