In ITR-3, F&O (Futures and Options) trading is categorized as Non-Speculative Business Income. When filling out the trading account section, you do not need to report individual "Purchase" or "Sales" values in the traditional sense, as these are notional contract values.

Instead, you should report your trading activity based on the net profit or loss derived from your broker's tax P&L statement. Here is how to handle the specific columns you mentioned:

1. How to Handle "Purchase" and "Sales" Columns

For F&O, you are not buying and selling physical goods, so the standard "Purchase" and "Sale" columns in the ITR-3 trading account are often left as follows:

  • Methodology: Most professionals and automated tax filing software use the "Net Profit/Loss" approach.

  • Reporting: You generally report your net profit or loss in the Schedule BP (Business or Profession). You do not need to invent a "Purchase" value if there is no physical stock being traded.

  • Turnover Reporting: Your "Turnover" (which is the sum of absolute profits and losses) is used to determine if you need a tax audit, but it is not filled into a "Purchase" column.

2. Key Steps for ITR-3 Filing

  • Broker Tax P&L: Download the Tax P&L report from your broker (e.g., Zerodha Console, Groww, ICICIdirect). This report is specifically designed for tax filing and will provide the figures you need.

  • Schedule BP: Enter your net profit or loss under "Profits and Gains of Business or Profession."

  • Expenses: You can claim business-related expenses (like brokerage, internet charges, advisory fees, or even a portion of your electricity/laptop depreciation) to reduce your net taxable business income.

  • Turnover Calculation: Ensure your turnover is calculated as the sum of the absolute values of all profits and losses for the year. This is required to determine if you meet the threshold for a tax audit.

3. Important Considerations

  • Audit Threshold: A tax audit (Form 3CD) is mandatory if your turnover exceeds ₹10 crore (if cash transactions are <5%).

  • Accounting: Since you are declaring business income, you are expected to maintain books of accounts as per Section 44AA if your income exceeds ₹2.5 lakh or turnover exceeds ₹25 lakh.

  • Losses: If you have a net loss, you can carry it forward for 8 years to set off against future business income, provided you file your ITR before the due date.

Recommendation: Since tax forms involve specific schedules (like Schedule BP for business income and Schedule BS for balance sheet items), it is highly advisable to use your broker's "Tax P&L" report, which is pre-formatted for ITR-3. If you are unsure about where to map specific ledger entries, consulting a Chartered Accountant is recommended to ensure your "Schedule BP" and "Schedule BS" (Balance Sheet) are filed correctly.

Summary: For F&O trading in ITR-3, do not try to input notional "Purchase" or "Sale" amounts as you would for physical inventory. Instead, report your net profit or loss in Schedule BP based on your broker's annual tax P&L statement. Use your broker's Turnover Statement to calculate your turnover for audit purposes.
