Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies whether students studying abroad need to file an Income Tax Return (ITR) when transferring money from India. Generally, if a student is a major with taxable income exceeding the basic exemption limit and is a resident, filing is necessary. However, if no taxable income exists, filing is not mandatory unless Tax Collected at Source (TCS) has been deducted on remittances, in which case filing can be done to claim a refund.

IF He is Major and

His Taxable income more than Basic Exemption and

He is resident

Then Yes.

In other cases file if any TCS deducted on remittance.

Not at all required.
Not required to file ITR since there is no income.

You may file just to get refund of tcs
