Success factor for qualifying CA course

Dear Students,

As a CA student what is our main object? To qualify and become the member of ICAI.  As students you have all the skills. Some skills were already with you while as some others need to be developed by your constant practice.

Do remember that the course is not so difficult to crack; an average student also can clear the CA exam. Thus, you need not to be a super genius to become CA.

Interest

This is a very critical factor for the ultimate goal of Success. So you have a self interest towards this premier course along with a good ambition too.

If you select the course own your interest, you can easily become a good and successful CA. On the other hand if you choice the course on the basis of your parents interest or you had joined the course because your friends are joining the course, or you don’t have any other option so joined the CA course will either find difficulties for clearing the exam or they will be a failure professional too.

Just think before join the course that you are really interested to the CA course. Otherwise joining the CA course shall be waste of resource like money and the precious resource of time too.

Goal

This is an other factor for success .Set a high but achievable target which will maximize and optimize all your inherent talent and effort. Care must be taken while setting a goal. Firstly it is achievable maximum goal.

A wrong goal will prove disaster to an average student and a super genius too. Set the goal according to your own ability and such goal is called achievable goal. If you are wrong in this, then will be a failure. You are new to the course and may be ignorant too. But you should ascertain the depth of the CA and set a right goal.

Dedication

This is a third factor for your success. Sacrifice your comfort zone for achievement of above goals. Identify your sleeping talent and waking them up. In addition to this you need to strengthen the weakness. Mentally imagine the toughest level of the CA course and channelize your effort towards the accomplishment of your goal. In Short link with the goal and start working hard and smart too.

Basic and concepts

By touching the basics and conceptual aspect you can become a master. So, becoming master in the subject is not so difficult. Basics and concepts are foundation and if this foundation is weak, then you will never ever going achieve your goal. Start with the basic before you start doing the expert level. If you are new in a subject better you need to acquire a good basic knowledge. If you have a clear idea with the basic then learning in the expert level will be easy.

Example: - If you are a non commerce student and joining the CA CPT, first you must be familiar with the basic concepts of accountancy. Better be master with the basic concepts and start preparing the CPT course.

Developing and balancing your analytical and conceptual ability

The syllabus in the CA course requires both the above skills. Some students were good enough in any of the one skill and weaker in others. If you are weaker in any one of the above indicate that the poor knowledge of Basics and concepts.  But for qualifying the CA course you must strengthener the weaker part

Example: - Some may be weak in Cost and FM or MAFA indicate poor analytical skills. Here you may be weak in the mathematical paper in your schooling life. You need to understand the concept and solve the problem by applying the logic of the concepts. You can go for a good coaching for the weaker subject.

Cost of failure of a CA student

Who can imagine the cost of failure in the Chartered Accountants (CA) profession? The answer is "No One" ! Then how can I do that !

But let me try to find out the approximate cost, based on the life of the present CA's around me; my friends, who could not able to pass the final; my experience and living standard of average student of our profession.

Indeed, no one can calculate these type of expectations, but at least we can conclude to reach at nearly cost to figure out our failure so that we should try more then we can do, to get the pass certificate in the very first attempt of the CA Final Exam.

Students, who are in the initial levels of the CA Examinations, can also think on this issue and try much better then their best effords to reach the upstaires of the profession.

The below calculation is based on various factors and is the result of my research on the matter from last 1 year, but as this is not at all predictable, the cost may differ. The motto of the calculation is to warn the students who are giving examinations while in service and students, who are not much serious about the examinations.

Descripttion INR
Amt (Approx.)
Cost of Coaching                         30,000.00
Cost of Preparation (3 Months): If accomodation is rented                         25,500.00
Cost of Examination (Including fee)                         10,000.00
Cost of waiting for results (2 Months)                         17,000.00
Difference of Next 6 Months salary                     2,10,000.00
Cost of searching a suitable job                         25,000.00
Difference of salary for the life time because of extra attempt               4,22,10,000.00
Total cost of Failure               4,25,27,500.00

Note:
1. Expected 65 yrs of service
2. Age of becoming CA is assumed as 23 years
3. Expected that you can search a job in one month.
4. Cost of coaching, preparation, examination etc. depends on many factors like your family status, place of living, type of city, colony and many more.
5. Difference of next 6 months of salary is taken because if you give next attempt means you will loose the salary of that period + the differencial salary which is more of a CA then a CA intermediate/PE2/PCC etc.
6. the last calculation may differ depending upon future performance of the person and type of his industry choosen, opportunity etc.
5. But on an average, you will loose around 10 to 12 Lack per year, if we expect that after becoming CA you will serve for 35 years.

In my opinion, there is nothing like cutting the marks from the marks you obtained fromthe copy checker. But you believe or not, if you check the copy of your friend, you will  give even less marks then your copy checker has given.

I have seen the copies of CA Intermediate students and you can not believe about the answers  written by them, sometimes, we used to laugh on the answers.

I'm not sure about the marks cutting methodology but want to ask one question to eachof the final students.. Someone is getting pass certificate then why not you? What he did, which you can't do?Just think on the above..

Best of luck for your professional career ahead

HOW TO COPE FAILURE – PART 2

This is in continuation with article HOW TO COPE PCC FAILURE by CA SUDHIR HALAKHANDI.

I want to tell you about me. I was in a big CA firm of that time and there were only 12 Sundays for me to clear 10 Sunday Tests as the maximum audits was out of my city. I have cleared one group of the Intermediate (Now PCC/IPCC) during articleship as the time for study was less and I could not joined the coaching classes. I have taken excessive leave due to family reasons and certainly the training was extended.

But-natural, the money was the matter that time to study and I have joined a small company to be able to born my expenses.

I was of the thought that the percentage of results is fixed and it is on the institute to pass a student and to stop a student. ‘BUT’

One day before 10-12 days of examination, one of my friend said to his friend “This is the guy, who is doing CA but I bet he can not”. Our common friend told me about that. You will surprise that I have cleared that examination without so much study. That was the turning point for me, I thank to my ‘that’ friend for his contribution.

What I have done? I thought if the results is 5% means someone is getting pass certificate, then why not me? What these passing students do?

Dear friend, failure in CA examinations is not same as failure in other examinations. As you all aware that if someone get total 400 marks without having less then 40 in any of subject, will get a pass certificate but if a person gets 399, I mean only 1 less then passers, he/she will be declared fail.

After the 7 rest days of your failure results, in first two days, you have to calculate your core areas and less interest areas in the course curriculum. Try to identify them and attack on the core and interest areas to grab 10-20 more marks. Then carve up the boring course material in chunks, now make a schedule to give them daily one hour out of best time of the day. Like you can give morning 6.30 to 7.30 (Don’t follow the clock yaar, If you found interesting topic, keep continue)

These are 10 suggestions for three month’s study time:

  1. No movies during working days in any case (Even you got a free ticket)
  2. Don’t get upset on comments passed on you, be cool…
  3. Consume 3 to 4 litre water each day and keep a jug of water near you at the time of study.
  4. No cigarettes, no intoxicant, no beer/ no cold drinks.
  5. Manage mom/dad’s work on Sundays.
  6. Don’t pick your last papers for assessment or answer, start a revision instead.
  7. Keep yourself cool and don’t hesitate to ask a query to brilliant students near you.
  8. No net, no chat (Except for updating yourself for 10-20 Minutes preferably during office time, I will suggest icai.org and caclubindia).
  9. Discuss subjects like law/AS/Audit/IDT or theoreticals; with your friends.
  10. Eat fruits/green vegetables/ low fat eatables/ rice etc. and Drink water/juces/ coconut milk etc.

I thank to CA Sudhir sir for extending support wording and encouragement to students.

I also thank to student for reading this article and invite to comment on this to improve further.

All the best

HOW TO COPE FAILURE – PART 3

This is in continuation with article “How to Cope PCC Failure” by CA Sudhir Halakhandi.

Friends,

In this part of the “How To Cope Failure”, I will suggest some method of studying.

1.      Choose a good location to study. This place should be clean, quiet, well-lit, a cool temperature and away from all distractions, such as friends, television or the computer.

*       Studying in a place similar to your exam environment might make you more comfortable during the test itself, as familiarity will help to reduce the fearsome feeling of testing.

*       Always be certain to take everything with you that you will need to work, including books, lecture notes, past assignments, pens and pencils.

2.      Stay on the plan- If you become stuck on a problem; clarify it (You may take the help of your tutor or friend). You might go over your allotted time and need to schedule more time for later. This is fine; your study plan is just a guideline, not an absolute. Catch up as soon as possible, and continue as planned.

3.      Revise the previous study- Redo past selective problems (You should mark each good problem at the time of first study), make notes for special type of problems and method of solving them. If you cannot explain the reasoning behind a mathematical process, then you likely don't understand it fully, so first try to understand the problem. You should also make a brief of your theoretical subjects at the time of first study and revise them by reading only this brief. I will suggest you to revise your day’s study at the time of dinner or before sleeping (You can keep a summary in front of you at this time).

4.      Memorize major concepts- As you study, jot down items that you need to memorize and carry the list with you throughout the day. Review this material when you are caught standing in line or with time to spare between classes.

5.      Selectively review your texts- Do not re-read your text book; you have already done it once and to do so again would overload you. Review sections you have highlighted (or underlined), any notes you made in the margins, formulae, definitions and chapter summaries.

6.      Study in a Chronicle order- Begin your studies with the material of low importance or subjects interesting to you and move forward in chronological order, spending only small amounts of time in low priority areas and more time in higher priority areas. This review will give you a stronger basis from which to master the more important material when you get to it. If you choose to study in chronological order, be careful to pace yourself so that you do not leave a critical study part to do the night before the exam.

Tips:

·         Planning only for more than one week in advance is ideal, especially when you have two groups to juggle.

·         Before all this prepare a schedule which meets your needs.

·         It’s also a good idea to keep some spare papers or notebook next to you while you’re studying so if you think of anything you need to do later, you can write it down and put it out of your mind, then get on with the studying.

·         Every morning make a To-Do list and keep it with you whole day, you can append or amend in between but don’t compromise with morning thoughts.

Now, I request all of the students of caclubindia to comment on above article and suggest to improve, if you think so !

Thanks for reading this article and best of my wishes for your examinations…

Regards,
**DM

CA S.SAIRAM POSTINGS

On the way to Pinnacle(CA)

Pinnacle is the handy term to symbolise the peak moments of our life, be it happiness or melancholy. Literally that we know, a pinnacle is a structure with a pointed top and one cannot manage hanging there at the top edge for hardly even a minute or half. We can also refer this to saturation to mean there is nothing left in the being. Saturation has two follow ups, one being the aftermath of frustration and the other being the virtue of renounciation.

While on our journey to the top our life would ideally seem like a 'Dow Jones' Average which is believed to be the parameter of a stock market functioning. In simple words; a rise followed by a fall further followed by a steeper rise than before and this is the pattern throughout. Remember this kid who enjoys and laughs out even while sliding down on the slides in the playground. But surprising indeed that the same kid does not emote anything while climbing up those slides. Perhaps he knows that the real joy is only on downsliding and thats why he wants to climb up. What a magnificient being is he! As William Wordsworth imagines, child is the father of man and it is not surprising that this could have been our own impromptu from the above situation as well. At the same time if the kid does not control its speed a little bit in the process it lands with a thud only to go with fractured limbs. Responsible human beings like us should learn to control our emotions or else disaster awaits.

Sometimes it seems funny to say that arising upto the pinnacle is not desirable if one does not have the wherewithal to cope up with the next phase. But in reality, can all the persons with abnormal blood pressure levels be allowed to travel upto Amarnath in the Himalayas? This is where a self introspection becomes extremely important. Tactically it would be prudent if we can postpone the arrival at cliff to the later half of our life so that we don't need to survive the downslide mentally as well as bodily for a long time, given the bubble span. Here is the rude practicality for ungrounded people ; conduct your own SWOT (Strength, weakness, opportunity, Threat ) analysis and get contended with your boundaries. The experiences in our lives have already been orchestrated to bring out the appropriate result and no tweaking is at our discretion. CA is the only course where completion matters more than a lucrative score at 24 (just for rhyme) and the market welcomes us across the board with warmth. This is no means to complacency but consolation.

Imagine the path to the pinnacle to be a marvellously smooth but a slippery ramp, we would only find ourselves back to square one with no possible rests midway. On the contrary if it is a staircase we can confidently relax and take breath for some time. A staircase is a better comparable to the 'Dow Jones' fashion assimilated above. Intermittent resting is essential or else......The journey to the top should be accompanied by intense concentration. One cannot afford to watch either sympathetically or sarcastically at those downstairs or even frown at miscreants, else the grave will pull us back. What is viewable is these steps and their beauty. Similarly, on our way to the pinnacle of CA, it is mandatory to not let our eyes off the path visible before us and relish all our own lively experiences and not of others.

Power should be acquired by virtue of knowledge and not ostensibly through designations alone. No one has the guts to deny that 'Knowledge is Wealth and Wealth leads to Power'. The real focus of living should be to acquire abundant knowledge and master ourselves as well as the mankind and nothing will add more pleasure than this. CA poses a library for us and we should take time off (reasonably) to turn the pages and learn the life.

Pursuing CA is like undertaking a spiritual journey

Facing troubles in life is imperative to keep the mental state in equilibrium. A drop of medicine is saver, a glass of the same is killer. In the same way too much of happiness leads to bad chemistry in the human mind and body in the form of an intoxication. It reminds of a very common situation where we are walking in a very narrow lane when a cyclist comes recklessly racing towards us from the other end. The moment we decide to give way to him and start swaying either ways not knowing which way to leave, the cyclist also invariably starts replicating the same action getting confused and what happens is an accident. But on the other hand if we remain stubborn walking ahead straight without caring for the cyclist, he will make appropriate adjustment and the mishap is averted. Perhaps the cyclist may meet with an accident but we are saved!. This is the elementary explanation on facing troubles in life. In the above simile the cyclist represents the troubles of life and we the person walking in the lane. What is required is rather a hard core adamancy to not get bogged down by the nature and size of these troubles and exhibit courage such that the trouble (cyclist) itself gets troubled and falls in the ditch. Let not the cyclist dash us (our hopes).

God is a wonderful timer and caretaker. Let us remember a night train which is responsible to drop the passengers at the terminal at a convenient time. It has to halt a lot many times midway so that we the passengers arrive at a suitable time early in the morning. Passengers remaining awake get frustrated and start bashing the railways or the driver for being too slow but not obviously those who fall asleep. The same happens to us in the course of CA examination. We tend to start cursing God and loose sleep. Perhaps after our success in the exams and a placement (which satisfies us) we need to count on those 'blessings' we had on the way. Unfortunately our memories are short enough to forget looking back at the road and savour those golden experiences. If only we could do that we will surely take time to laugh at our own stupidity. Such obstacles were indeed indispensable so that we arrive fully ripen at this auspicious moment in the universe. Let us now be passengers asleep (be peaceful) and wake up at the destination.

A passenger in the train does not get perturbed that his luggage is an additional burden for the train. Neither does the train mind carrying his massive luggage. Why do all of us upload all worries and responsibilities in ourselves instead of the almighty?. In fact it is God's responsibility to see that our problems are solved. If every problem has a solution where is the problem?. For those who nurture a lot of faith in God, they will start experiencing a subtle happiness in facing the pains of life and tranquility during ecstasy. This is precisely what is called spirituality. The difference between God and Man is; God created Man for Himself and never became a slave to him, whereas Man created infinite things for himself and became a slave to all of them. This is the reason for his misery. If he has to graduate to being God, the slavery has to get lost. Let us remain merely acquainted to our material desires and not try to marry them.

Pursuing CA is like undertaking a spiritual journey. It is not a cake walk but certainly not a rocket science either. Crying baby definitely gets its milk. So let us not cry over the spilt milk. All that is required is good health, hardwork and undeterred faith on any one force (be it the self or Almighty) it is rest assured that we have jumped onto the Bandwagon. A pessimist always keeps booing "there is many a slip between the cup and the lip", but an optimist would retort angrily "Did'nt you drink the cup of coffee?"

thnx a lot for ur effort...

Thanku very much sir.smile.
