esop - exercise period and vesting period

1) please explain difference between exercise period and vesting period in case of esop.
2) date of vesting is 01.01.20120 means what ?

vesting period means period for which employee has to perform his service in order to be eligible for ESOP...
And exercising period means period in wh ich you can claim the ESOP...

vesting date 1.1.12 means on this date Option will vest... i. e
it will mature....!!!
