If a non resident Indian aged above 80 years who does not have an insurance cover incurs medical expenditure of, say Rs. 50,000  for himself, what would be his eligible deduction, if any under section 80D for AY 2016-17 ??

no..
sec 80d is applicable only in case of resident individual or huf..
moreover only a resident ind can incur medical expenditure only in case of his resident individual who is either a senior citizen or a very senior citizen. senior or very senior citizen cannot incur such exp.
same concept for huf for a member.
sec 80d not applicable for NR

So I understand no deduction would be available in this case since the assessee is a non resident.

80D provided deduction to non residents too with some restrictions.

no tony 80d dont provide deduction to a non resident at all.... in any cases..
this is 100% sure
