Do i need to pay tax?

But what about the fact that the tax was not deducted? Was the amount meant to be tax-free? Or does does that mean I'm allowed to live tax-free life as the total income (including the amount from the game show) falls below the taxable limit?

Or should I put the entire blame on our relative (aunt) and let her take the headache? :)))

Just asking, is she required to pay the tax? (She is a housewife, so no pay.) If yes, how should she go about it?

this is only oct start, and wait for taxman notice or enquiery,

legally u have to pay 30% and file a return simpalt, but wait as return filing date is too distant now, and the return of this will take place in june/july 2013.

So, technically speaking, till June/July 2013, I'm worry free, right? Then the taxman (who is that?) will give me a notice and then I'll have to file tax, is that correct? Please let me know.

The cheque is account payee, so I don't have any alternative other than depositing it in my account. Moreover, one of my friends told me that for transactions more than Rs.50,000/- one has to provide PAN number. As I've never had to file tax returns neither needed to have any transactions more than Rs.50,000/-, I never bothered to have a PAN card. So:

a) Is my friend correct?

b) Is there an alternate way to deposit the cheque or retrieve the money without quoting PAN number?

for cheque , no pan needed

taxman= incometax department

So, I should start worrying about the tax payment after the Income Tax Department issues me a notification of some sort? Or should it be my aunt who should worry about tax payment?

In either case, how should I/my aunt deposit the tax in June/July 2013?

And any chance of any danger? I mean it sounds really odd... Waiting till June/July to submit taxes...

I know I must be sounding like an idiot and as a matter of fact, I'm actually feeling like one. I've never faced anything like this before... Well, there's a first time of everything, I guess. Thanks a lot for the patience and bearing with my questions.

too mcuh worrying may damage the interest:)

1st date of advance payment was gone on 15th sept, so what diff is there?

if you discharge the tax on 29th june 2013 even ( if the same gets clear that you have to pay), then it might invite some nominal interest.

as you have received the cheque only, and i hope the company will send a letter also stating the fact of tax incidence, ( if not handed over yet) so wait for the communication fro either side, company or incometax regarding the issue.

wait and watch is the best remedy for the time.

Thanks a million times for your time and patience... :)

I'm going to wait now as you suggested. Lets see what happens. In the meantime, if I have any more doubts, I'll be back again!

Thanks again for all the support! Greatly appreciated! :)
