Hello All,
Is a senior citizen entitled to claim deduction u/s 80DDB for cataract operation expenses ? My understanding is that section 80DDB is for specified medical diseases only and this list does not include cataract operation.
Please clarify and let me know how can we claim deduction of such expenses?

Hello Gayatri ji,
In the Government hospital in which the patient is receiving the treatment, such certificate, with prior approval of the Head of that hospital, may be issued by any other specialist working full-time in that hospital and having a post-graduate degree in General or Internal Medicine, which is recognised by the Medical Council of India.
So take a view, this might get him deduction, otherwise you are correct as cataract is not there in the list of specified diseases.
