You can fill up your attempt as one in the campus registration form if u clear it in your 1st eligible attempt. But it doesnt necessarily mean that you will be considered at par with other first attempters in the shortlisting process. It depends upon the shortlisting policy of that particular organization. Although you are shown as a 1st attempter in the campus registration form, the shortlisting company may also take into account the gap between ur pcc and final exams. If u have any good working experience during the intervening period(you have to mention ur prior work experience, if any, in the campus reg form), it will be okay. I would actually say in that case you will be preferred over the normal 1st attempters having no experience(who has cleared without any postponement of registration to final) . But in case you arent having any work exp., it may be a problem. Anyways as I say it depends upon the shortlisting policy of that particular company. But, according to me, you will be in a better position than people who have taken multiple attempts for clearing final and who dont have any prior work experience. Further u dont need to be a 1st attempter to get shortlisted in the campus. Maybe for companies visiting on the premier day, it shall be a pre-requisite. But there are other decent companies who consider multiple attempters for shortlisting. For example, my cousin who cleared in 6 attempts got shortlisted in 5 companies(Bosch,Grant Thornton,EY,Genepact and Amazon).
Also I wudnt say it is a herculean task to get a good job off-campus. Actually it is the other way around. It is really a herculean task to get a job thru campus(even if you are a 1st attempter, it is going to be difficult). So you shouldnt lose hope even if u dont get a good job thru campus. Of course you should attend campus but you cant pin all your hopes on ICAI campus. If you wait for a while and be persistent with your job hunting, you will soon land up a good job off-campus.
The five years gap is like a sunk cost and there is no use worrying about it. Whether the companies consider the gap as a problem or not is something about which you can do nothing. I suppose it is of no use worrying about things which arent under our control.
