Try this one:-

There is a clock that has a special way of telling the time. It does not have any hands or numbers on it, but it has a chimer.

If the time is 1 o'clock, it chimes once. If the time is 2 o'clock, it chimes twice, and so forth. The time gap between any two chimes is 2 seconds.

How many seconds would it take you to know the time, after the first chime is heard, if it is 4 o'clock?

puzzle : chimer clock

6 seconds??

6 seconds

8 SECONDS

FIRST CHIME.... 2 SECONDS... SECOND CHIME....2 SECONDS.....THIRD CHIME.....2 SECONDS....FOURTH CHIME....

2 SECONDS... NO FURTHER CHIME...

THEREFORE 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 SECONDS....

laugh

DEAR JIJU

the question is how much time would it take after first chime - so its second+third+fourth ,ie, 2+2+2= 6 sec

Answer is 8 seconds........

If the time is 4 o'clock, the clock will chime three times after the first one......

So the time taken is 3 x 2  = 6 seconds....

But extra time of 2 seconds is required to see whether it chimes again after the fourth chime.......

So total time required = 6 +2 = 8 seconds.....smiley

Dear Monith...

after 6 seconds.. we hear fourth chime and after that we will wait for the fifth chime.. if there is no fifth chime after that it means it four o' clock.. Unless we wait how would one come to know that it is four o'clock or not...

i agree with raghuram's explanation.

@ jijo i couldnt understand your earlier explanation until i read raghuram's!

Yes...you guys got it right....

But there is a prominent mistake in the question itself...

The time is more than 8 seconds because you have also got to consider the time of the chime as well. If the chime itself takes 2 seconds to mark one hour, then the time for 4 o'clock increases. Isn't it??

6 SECS :)

I Think It should be 6 Seconds....

No guys...you are incorrect!!

It should be more than 8 seconds!!

After 1st chime, wait for 2 seconds to hear the second chime which would also take some time..

Then after the second chime is heared, after the wait of two more seconds the third chime could be heard..

In this manner the total time would be calculated as under-

2sec + time taken by 2nd chime + 2 sec + time taken by 3rd chime + 2 sec + time taken by 4th chime + 2 sec

Good observation there Soniya...yes

So is it Spot on?blush
