Doing articleship in Big firm gives exposure in the sence big firms have more of corporate clients and wide variety of work. If the CA firm have good policy for training articles by rotation in every firld of their work, an article trainee will have overall knowledge of work and will have better understanding regarding the field they want to choose after clearing the finals. This is waht we call as "EXPOSURE"

In First year of your articleship, you will be in the team where senior articles will be guiding you. Gradually on reaching the final year, you will be gaining experience and you will be leading a team of fresh articles  clerks. 

You will find many people saying that articleship is waste of time but actually its a really good experience in our professional career particularly at a stage when we have just begun our journey in our profession

It is advisable to find a middle size firm which have diversified work and good clientele and join it for articleship. Its not necessary that only firms in Mumbai can give you exposure. Any good firm in your city can give you the exposure which is required
