How to Write a Thank You Note for a Gift

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Thank you card or blank note card
  1. Step 1

Get out the pen and paper! Handwritten notes are more personal and generally better appreciated than email or typed notes.

  2. Step 2

After greeting the note's recipient, start by saying something other than "thank you". If you saw the person recently, mention how nice it was to see them. If not, write that you hope they are doing well.

    Ex: Dear Aunt Kathy,
I'm so glad you were able to celebrate my birthday at the party last week.

    OR

    Dear Aunt Kathy,

I hope this note finds you happy and healthy.

  3. Step 3

Next, thank the person for the gift. Use words like generous, thoughtful, and sweet, but be sincere. Describe the gift in detail using a few adjectives. If the gift was money, refer to it as a "gift" and list an appropriate way you plan to use it. This part of the note should be 2-3 sentences.

Ex: Thank you so much for the cute purple . It was so thoughtful of you to remember my favorite color, and I can't wait to wear it to school this fall!

    OR

Thank you very much for the generous birthday gift. I plan on buying some great souvenirs on my upcoming beach vacation.

  4. Step 4

If you did not start the note by wishing the person well, you can end it that way. If you did, you may add another pleasantry, such as saying you hope to see them soon. Sign your name, and you're done!

Ex: I hope you and Uncle Jim are enjoying your summer!

    Love,

    Bob

    OR

I look forward to seeing you next month at the family reunion!

    Love,

    Bob

Things You'll Need:

  • Writing Paper
  • Pen
  1. Step 1

Maintain a gift list - Compile a list of all the gifts you have received. The list can be handwritten on maintained on a spreadsheet. Track who sent the gift, a descripttion of the gift, and the date you sent the corresponding thank you note. This will help make sure you write a note for every gift you receive.

  2. Step 2

Establish a note writing area or "toolbox" - Designate a place for writing thank you notes. Keep the area stocked with your gift list, pens, stationery, address book and stamps. Another idea is to keep all of the items you need in an expandable file folder so you can carry it with you and have everything at hand you need to write your notes.

  3. Step 3

Put thought into your pens and stationery - Select pens you enjoy using. It is not fun to write thank you notes with a pen that doesn't write well or isn't comfortable in your hand. When choosing stationery, use something that makes you happy when you look at it, but also make sure it is practical for thank you notes.

  4. Step 4

Create a writing plan - Particularly when you are writing notes for a wedding or a big event, develop a note writing plan or schedule. Your event didn't happen without a checklist and timeline. Be specific and realistic when creating your plan.

  5. Step 5

Don't procrastinate - Whenever possible, write your thank you notes as soon as possible when you open your gifts. This is beneficial because your excitement about the gift will show in the note and you won't be overwhelmed with a pile full of gifts that need thank you notes.

  6. Step 6

Use reference materials - There is no reason to recreate the wheel when writing thank you notes. Use your resources to help brainstorm thank you note verbiage. You may want to research tried and true thank you note language by reading some thank you note guide books or purchasing software designed for composing thank you notes.

About Thank-You Notes

People send thank you notes to acknowledge another person's gift, a service rendered, or a kindness offered.
They are often sent to family and friends, but many people also send them to prospective employers to show appreciation for considering them for employment. These notes can be typed or handwritten and then mailed, faxed, or emailed

    Features

  1. Thank you notes typically are made up of only a few sentences. They typically open with "Dear ______," which is followed by a few sentences describing what the writer is thankful for and why they appreciated the act.
For example, if a person named Walter were writing a thank you note to show appreciation for a SHIRT that was given to them by an aunt, it could say something along the lines of: "Dear Aunt Ida, Thank you so much for the shirt! I really enjoy the unicorn drawing on the center. I promise to think about you every time I wear it. Thanks again! Love, Walter."
A thank you note to a prospective employer is professional and formal in tone. It might read,
"Thank you for your time today. I appreciate learning more about this excellent opportunity at XYZ, Inc. Please know I am very interested in pursuing this position."

    Size

  2. The length of a thank you note can range from a few sentences to an entire page. It is rare that a traditional thank you note exceeds a single page. Often, they are written on small cards that are approximately three-by-five-inches wide, put into envelopes, sealed and mailed. These notes are typically handwritten, however, it is becoming increasingly popular to write thank you notes via email.
For thank you notes sent after a JOB INTERVIEW use high-quality stock stationery, or
send a typed letter by fax or send a formally-worded email.

    Benefits

  3. Writing thank you notes, especially personalized ones that directly address the person you appreciate, have some definite benefits. One benefit is that they are a simple yet effective way to show your appreciation.
For a job prospect, thank you notes sent to the person who interviewed you is standard procedure. If you are very keen on the job, send the thank you note that day or the very
next day. Proofread your letter carefully before sending, faxing or emailing it.

    Function

  4. Thank you notes function as a simple yet tender gesture of your appreciation. Thank you notes do not always have to be exceptionally personal, in fact they are used very often in a business setting as well. For example, it is not uncommon for a potential employee to write a thank you note to the manager at a job he or she is applying for thanking them for an interview or for their consideration of employment.

    Significance

  5. While thank you notes can often be used on an everyday basis, they are usually reserved for showing appreciation to actions or gifts given on important days in the sender's life. That is, thank you notes are most commonly sent after wedding, bridal showers, baby showers, graduations and anniversaries. They are significant because they fall in line with traditional etiquette.
For business thank yous, it is a way to emphasize your interest in a particular job and to show that prospective employer that you are able to communicate promptly and professionally.

How to Write a Thank You Note

Begin with a fresh sheet of note paper and a smooth pen. Thank-you notes are traditionally written in cursive, and are headed by the date and a salutation: "Dear Aunt Ruth," followed by a comma.

  • Step 2

Thank the recipient for the gift, favor or entertainment given.

  • Step 3

Write about the appropriateness of the gift or favor: "Your baby-sitting for my children has truly been a lifesaver in these difficult times." (You can describe a gift that didn't quite suit your taste as "a conversation piece" or "unique.")

  • Step 4

Tie the appropriateness of the gift to the person who gave it to you: "You've always understood my taste in clothes."

  • Step 5

Write about how you plan to use the gift (or substitute this step for step 3): "I have a picture of my parents that will look perfect in your frame." If you received a gift of money, mention how you will spend it.

  • Step 6

Add a line to update the giver about your life: "I have completely recovered from my cold and plan to hit the slopes again as soon as I can."

  • Step 7

Sign your thank-you note: "With thanks, Billy."

How to Get Your Kids to Write Thank-You Notes

Show kids how to say thanks

Training them early and setting a good example will get the kids' thank-you notes in the mailbox

Take the kids along when you pick out the notes. They should have a say in which ones they send.

  • Step 2

Make thank-you cards if you only need a few; the kids will have so much fun they'll be happy to do it next time.

  • Step 3

Get the thank-you notes out early - as soon as possible after the gift has been opened.

  • Step 4

Write the message on a separate piece of paper if your kids are under 10. They can copy it over onto the note and make it pretty. Have an older child make up the message first, and then you can help polish it.

  • Step 5

Cover the basics by thanking everyone who sent the gift.

  • Step 6

Name the gift. "Thanks for the snorkel," "I loved the fish tank," "It was the wagon I was hoping for." It's important that the kids know what gift they're thanking the giver for.

  • Step 7

Include a little story: "We made cookies in the toy oven" or "Our dog slept with that Raggedy Anne." This shows it was used and appreciated.

  • Step 8

Send a greeting and a nice thought, which indicates it was not just for the gift that everyone thought of the giver. For example, "I hope to see you at the cottage" or "Hanukkah was special at your house."

  • Step 9

Have your child sign however he or she can: a name, an inked handprint, a picture of the infant, an X, a lipsticked kiss mark, scribble scrabble with the child's name printed next to the crayoned attempt, etc.

How to Address Thank-You Notes

Thank-you notes are a great way to express appreciation to friends and family members for a special gift or thoughtful action. These notes are commonly sent following  WEDDINGS, birthday parties, showers and graduations. Address the thank-you note appropriately to show respect and gratitude to the recipient

Create a list of individuals to whom you want to show appreciation by sending a thank-you note.

  • Step 2

Make sure you have updated addresses for everyone on your list before writing the notes.

  • Step 3

Use a more formal approach when writing names on an envelope. Use a first and last name for an individual (such as "Mary Brown") and a combined name for couples (such as "Dan and Mary Brown"). For families, add the child's name after the parents' names ("Dan and Mary Brown and Laura"). It is also acceptable to list just the family name ("Brown Family").

  • Step 4

Write out the address using two lines immediately below the names. The street address should be featured on the second line and the city, state and zip code should be listed on the third line. Separate the city, state and zip with commas. You may also choose to write the zip code on a fourth line, as long as you indent it. Always spell out commonly abbreviated terms such as "Street" and "Road." Use full names for states, as well.

  • Step 5

Include your return address on the back of the envelope in the center of the flap.

  • Step 6

Use a more personal approach when addressing recipients on the interior of the card. Use a salutation such as "Dear" and follow it with the person's first name. For couples or families, make sure to list the first name of each recipient. A comma should follow the names.

    Tips & Warnings
    •
The card's message should be handwritten to give it a personal touch, but you can save time by using labels for your return address and the recipient's address. You can also print directly onto the envelope if you are computer savvy.

    •
When using a title to preface a name, use "Ms." if the recipient is a woman and you aren't sure how she prefers to be addressed.

    •
Write legibly to make sure the address is readable.

    •
Avoid an embarrassing situation by checking to make sure that all names are spelled correctly. Sending a note with a proper name misspelled is disrespectful and will undoubtedly diminish the meaning of the message

How to Write a Belated Thank You Note

Write a Belated Thank You Note

Etiquette demands that when a gift is received, one writes a note to thank the giver. Everyone understands that saying “Thanks” is important. Most everyone experiences a time when we get busy, forget or just don’t get around to sending a note to say “Thanks.” Take the time to say “Thank You!” The old adage, better late than never, applies to this situation!

Understand that most people expect some sort of a Thank You note. Even though many people will not address the lack of a thank you directly with you; they will have noticed that you did not take the effort to write a simple note.

  • Step 2

Don’t procrastinate any more. Decide that it is time to write those notes of appreciation. Schedule a time to sit down and write. The actual time you spend working on a thank you note is minimal. Even if you have a whole list of Thank You notes for a wedding or birthday; setting aside a few minutes a day will allow you to get the task finished efficiently.

  • Step 3

Purchase either some pretty note paper or a box of blank Thank You cards. These can be purchased inexpensively at a discount store. Make sure you have pens, as well.

  • Step 4

Gather your list of gifts and givers. If you don’t have a list of who gave you what gift, make one to the best of your memory.

  • Step 5

At the time you have scheduled, gather your supplies. This should include the list mentioned above, pens, stamps, Thank You notes and the addresses of the individuals to whom you will be writing.

  • Step 6

    jQuery(document).ready(function(){ jQuery('#jsArticleStep6 span.image a:first').attr('target='_blank' rel='nofollow' href','https://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2184179/919886writing_Full.jpg'); });

Handwrite a brief note to each person. This should include mention of the gift, your appreciation, as well as a brief apology for being slow in getting out the note.

  • Step 7

Address the envelope. If you absolutely must, you may use computer printed labels. Hand written addresses look more personal, but most people would rather get a note with a printed label than no note at all.

  • Step 8

Attach the stamp and go directly to the post office to mail the notes. Many people are guilty of writing a note and waiting weeks to mail it. If you take the effort to write a note, make sure the person receives it.

    Things You'll Need:

    • Name and address of gift giver
    • Plain note card or note paper
    • Ink pen

How to Write the Perfect "Thank You" Note

Some people struggle with writing "Thank You" notes or cards. Whether you need to thank your boss, a friend, or your mother, it is important to express your gratitude well. To write a great "Thank You" note/card, here are some simple steps for you to follow!

Choose generic cards that can be used for any occasion. Cards should be blank inside with ample room for writing. The outside can either have a simple picture or the words "Thank You" embossed or printed on its cover. You can find simple cards at Walgreen's, Hallmark, or stationery stores.

  • Step 2

Write your draft before putting pen to cardstock. Your words can be simple and to the point. After your greeting, your first sentence should express thanks for the specific gift. Your second sentence should offer what you like aobut the gift, or how it will be used. Don't be afraid to use adjectives (descripttive words).

    Example:
    Dear Uncle Larry,
Thank you so much for the giant, blue piggy bank. I'm sure Johnny will use it once he is big enough to have an allowance!

  • Step 3

Next, let the person know that you felt their gift was a thoughtful gesture, and at the same time, name the specific gift item and express how it is/or will be enjoyed. Again, don't be stingy with the adjectives. This shows that you noticed details about the gift that was made or chosen.

    Example:
Your gift was very thuoghtful and I am sure Johnny will put his huge piggy bank to good use!

  • Step 4

Once you are satisfied with your message, write it legibly onto your actual "Thank You" card, preferably in pen.

  • Step 5

Next, sign the card as you would a letter, with: Sincerely, Love, Yours Truly, etc.

  • Step 6

Finally, address your envelope, put a stamp on it, and mail your "Thank You" card right away. You'll want to respond to your gift-giver as soon as possible so that they know you recieved their present, and are pleased with it.

    Happy Writing!!!
