Step by step process for filing Income Tax Return

 

 

 

You should prepare your income tax returns first before filing the same. You can prepare your tax returns here.

 

Once you have prepared your returns, you should download your returns and save them to your computer (local disk) and then proceed to file them with Income tax department.

 

 

eFiling your returns with Income Tax Department  

 

1. Visit the Income Tax efiling website

 

2. Login to your account. If you donot have an account, you should register an account first with your PAN card number.

 

3. After logging in, you should submit/ upload the return. Here is a step by step guide to do the same.

4. On successful submission of your return, you will see a link/ alert to save your acknowledgment (ITR-V). Save the file to your local hard disk (computer).

 

5. This file is password protected. Your password is your PAN card no. and date of birth. e.g. if your PAN card number is ABCDE1234F and date of birth is 26-08-1970 then your password will be "abcde1234f26081970". All the letters are in small case.

 

6. Open the file and take a print out of the same. You should then sign this page (its towards the bottom of the page).

 

7. Send the signed copy of the ITR-V (acknowledgment) to this address by ORDINARY POST. Please donot try to send the same by Speed Post or by Courier as it will not be accepted. The address mentioned here is a Post Bag address and Speed post and courier agencies donot deliver the letters to Post bags. So please make sure you send the same by ORDINARY POST only.

8. Your ITR-V should reach the above address within 30 days of uploading your data (efiling your return) at Income tax website.

 

9. You will receive an email from Income Tax department on your email address (which you have used to prepare and file your income tax return) acknowledging receipt of ITR-V.

1. If are running late in sending the ITR-V  or if you are a NRI and feel your ITR-V cannot reach the above address by ordinary post within 30 days of eFiling, we can help you to speed up the process.

Normal Filing Case (Paper Filing Case)

 

1. Download your paper return and acknowledgement. Print 2 copies of both the documents.

 

2. Sign the paper return (generally on Page2 in the verification block). No need to sign the acknowledgment

 

3. Visit your jurisdictional income tax office. Please remember you should submit the return only at your jurisdicational income tax office. To find your income tax office, visit Find your PAN card number link. Provide the details and you can see details of your assessing officer. This is your jurisdictional income tax office. You need to submit your returns at this office.

 

4. You can send the same through a representative as well.

 

5. The receiving office at the income tax office will stamp your acknowledgement and give a copy back to you.
