Chandigarh Over 60 per cent of those who enroll for chartered accountancy every year in Chandigarh are women, while the national average is 40 per cent, says the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). “Of the 90,000 new admissions across the country, 4,000 are from Chandigarh,” said ICAI president Uttam Prakash Agarwal. He inaugurated a two-day national conference in the city on Saturday.
With the theme ‘CA-Core of Global Economy - Practice and Innovations’, the conference discussed the latest in the profession including international financial reporting standards, new extended business reporting language, goods and service tax and direct tax code. The conference is being held in Chandigarh for first time as the city branch is the largest and one of the most active ones in the northern region after the National Capital, which was not the venue this time.
The institute has recently signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England, Wales and Australia. An ICAI member can join the foreign institutions by clearing only one paper (UK) or two (Australia). Agarwal also announced the opening of a decentralised centre in the city.
