India's revenue collections from the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) have recorded a sharp increase in the first part of FY 2026-27. According to data released by the Income Tax Department, STT collections stood at Rs 40,214.36 crore as of September 17, 2026, compared with Rs 26,305.72 crore during the corresponding period of FY 2025-26.
This represents a 52.9% year-on-year increase, highlighting the substantial rise in revenue generated through transactions in the securities market.
STT Collections Cross Rs 40,000 Crore
The latest figures show that STT has emerged as one of the stronger-growing components of direct tax collections during the period.
In FY 2025-26, STT collections stood at Rs 26,305.72 crore as of September 17. This year, the figure has increased to Rs 40,214.36 crore, translating into an increase of nearly Rs 13,909 crore.
The data forms part of the government's latest Direct Tax Collections for FY 2026-27, compiled from the Tax Information Network (TIN).

No STT Refunds Reported
Another notable feature of the figures is that STT refunds were reported at zero in both periods shown in the statement.
Consequently, the net STT collection for FY 2026-27 also stands at Rs 40,214.36 crore as of September 17, compared with Rs 26,305.72 crore during the corresponding period last year.
This means the entire gross STT collection reported for the period is reflected in the net collection figure.
Overall Direct Tax Collections Also Rise
The increase in STT comes alongside broader growth in India's direct tax collections.
According to the statement, gross direct tax collections increased from Rs 12,43,582.45 crore as of September 17, 2025, to Rs 14,32,437.43 crore as of September 17, 2026, representing growth of 15.19%.
After accounting for refunds, net direct tax collections reached Rs 12,12,410.71 crore, compared with Rs 10,73,272.17 crore a year earlier. The net collection growth stood at 12.96%.
Advance Tax Collections Grow 16.18%
The government's advance tax collections have also shown positive growth during the period.
Advance tax collections increased from Rs 4,49,256.41 crore as of September 17, 2025, to Rs 5,21,940.72 crore as of September 17, 2026.
This represents an overall growth of 16.18%. Corporate taxpayers contributed Rs 4,16,083.59 crore in advance tax, while non-corporate taxpayers contributed Rs 1,05,856.69 crore.
The corresponding growth rates were 18.09% for corporate tax and 9.24% for non-corporate tax .
What the STT Numbers Show
The sharp rise in STT collections provides an important data point within the government's overall direct tax revenue performance for FY 2026-27. While the figures themselves record tax collections rather than explaining the reasons for the increase, the 52.9% rise in STT revenue marks a significant year-on-year movement.
As of September 17, 2026, STT collections had already crossed the Rs 40,000-crore mark, compared with just over Rs 26,000 crore during the same period of the previous financial year.
