Income Tax Department Warns Taxpayers Against Phishing Emails Promising Refunds

Last updated: 12 August 2025

The Income Tax Department has issued an urgent alert to taxpayers about a phishing scam targeting individuals who have recently filed their Income Tax Returns (ITR).

Several taxpayers have reported receiving fraudulent emails claiming an "error in tax calculation" and promising a refund. The fake emails, sent from donotreply@incometaxindiafilling.gov.in (note the misspelling of "filing"), contain malicious links designed to steal personal and banking information.

Authorities clarified that the department never asks for confidential details such as passwords, OTPs or bank account information through phone calls, emails or SMS.

  • Avoid clicking on any suspicious links or attachments.
  • Verify that emails come from the official domain @incometax.gov.in.
  • Report phishing attempts immediately to webmanager@incometax.gov.in.

The department reiterated that phishing scams peak during the tax filing and refund season, urging taxpayers to remain vigilant and protect their personal data.
