Income Tax Department Enables Online Challan Correction Facility

Last updated: 25 June 2026

The Income Tax Department has introduced an Online Challan Correction Request facility on the e-Filing portal, allowing taxpayers to rectify common mistakes made while paying taxes without having to visit the Income Tax office.

The new feature is expected to significantly reduce compliance hassles for taxpayers who accidentally select the wrong Assessment Year, Tax Year, Major Head, or Minor Head while making tax payments. Previously, such errors often required lengthy correspondence with tax authorities or visits to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO). The online facility now offers a faster and more transparent correction mechanism for eligible challans.

Why Challan Correction Matters

A tax challan acts as proof of payment made to the government. Even a small mistake while generating the challan can result in:

  • Tax credit not reflecting in Form 26AS or AIS
  • Outstanding tax demands appearing on the portal
  • Difficulties in filing Income Tax Returns (ITR)
  • Notices from the Income Tax Department
  • Delays in refund processing

The online correction facility helps taxpayers resolve such issues before they become major compliance problems.

What Corrections Can Be Made Online?

The e-Filing portal currently allows correction of the following challan attributes:

1. Assessment Year (AY) or Tax Year (TY)

Taxpayers can correct the year against which the tax payment was originally made if it was selected incorrectly while generating the challan.

2. Major Head (Tax Applicable)

The facility permits correction of the major tax category under which payment was made.

3. Minor Head (Type of Payment)

Taxpayers can rectify errors in the type of tax payment selected while depositing tax.

Which Challans Are Eligible for Online Correction?

Not every challan can be corrected online. The facility is currently available only for:

  1. Challans relating to Assessment Year 2020-21 onwards
  2. Unconsumed challans
  3. Challans paid under Minor Heads:
  • 100 - Advance Tax
  • 300 - Self-Assessment Tax
  • 400 - Demand Payment as Regular Assessment Tax

For challans pertaining to earlier years or other minor heads, taxpayers must approach their Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.

What Does "Unconsumed Challan" Mean?

One of the most important conditions is that the challan must be "unconsumed."

An unconsumed challan is a challan that has not yet been adjusted against any tax liability or processed for tax credit purposes. Once a challan is consumed, it becomes final and cannot be corrected through the online facility. Taxpayers facing such situations may need to seek assistance from their Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.

Time Limits for Filing Challan Correction Requests

The Income Tax Department has prescribed strict timelines for making corrections:

Type of Correction Time Limit
Assessment Year / Tax Year Within 7 days of challan deposit date
Major Head Correction Within 30 days of challan deposit date
Minor Head Correction Within 30 days of challan deposit date

Once these deadlines expire, taxpayers may have to approach the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer for relief.

Step-by-Step Process to Submit a Challan Correction Request

Step 1: Login to e-Filing Portal

Login using your PAN, password and authentication credentials.

Step 2: Navigate to Challan Correction

Go to:

Services → Challan Correction

Step 3: Create a New Request

Select the option:

+ Create Challan Correction Request

Step 4: Choose Correction Type

Select one or more applicable correction categories:

  • Assessment Year / Tax Year
  • Major Head
  • Minor Head

Step 5: Select Challan

Locate the challan either through:

  • Challan Identification Number (CIN)
  • Assessment Year
  • Tax Year

Only eligible unconsumed challans will appear for correction.

Step 6: Update Details

Enter the corrected information for the selected fields.

Step 7: Verify Proposed Changes

Review the summary carefully before submission.

Step 8: Complete e-Verification

The request must be authenticated through:

  • Aadhaar OTP
  • Electronic Verification Code (EVC)
  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)
  • Other available verification modes

Step 9: Track Status

After successful submission, taxpayers can monitor the progress through the Challan Correction dashboard.

How Long Does Processing Take?

According to the Income Tax Department's user manual, status updates may take approximately 7 to 20 days after submission of the correction request. Taxpayers can track their applications online and download corrected challan details once approved.

Important Restrictions Taxpayers Should Know

The facility comes with certain limitations:

Correction Allowed Only Once

A challan can be corrected only one time through the e-Filing portal. If additional corrections are required later, the taxpayer must approach the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.

No Changes After Submission

Once a correction request is submitted, it cannot be modified. If the request gets rejected, a fresh application may be filed, subject to eligibility.

Offline Corrections Will Not Appear on Portal

Corrections processed manually by the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer are not reflected in the Challan Correction dashboard. Taxpayers may instead verify the impact through Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement (AIS).

TDS/TCS Challans Not Covered

The online challan correction facility is designed for PAN-based tax payments. Corrections relating to TDS/TCS challans must be processed through the TRACES system and applicable procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I correct a challan more than once?

No. Only one correction request is permitted per challan on the e-Filing portal. Further corrections require intervention from the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer.

Can I correct challans for AY 2019-20 or earlier?

No. The online facility currently supports only AY 2020-21 onwards. Older challans require manual assistance from the Assessing Officer.

Can I correct a challan after it has been consumed?

No. Consumed challans cannot be corrected through the online portal.

Where can I download the corrected challan details?

After approval, taxpayers can access:

Services → Challan Correction → Download Corrected Details

A Major Step Towards Digital Tax Administration

The online Challan Correction Request facility represents another significant step in the Income Tax Department's ongoing digital transformation journey. By enabling taxpayers to rectify challan-related mistakes online, the department has reduced dependency on physical interactions, improved transparency, and simplified tax compliance for millions of taxpayers across India.

For taxpayers, the key takeaway is simple: if a mistake is noticed immediately after tax payment, act quickly. The online correction facility offers a convenient remedy, but only within the prescribed timelines.
