The Ministry of Finance has notified July 31, 2026 as the last date for filing appeals or applications before the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) in specified cases.
The notification, issued on June 30, 2026, has been released under Section 112 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017. It supersedes the earlier notification dated September 17, 2025, and aims to provide clarity regarding timelines for appeals and applications before the GST Appellate Tribunal.

Who Can Benefit from the Extended Deadline?
According to the notification, the extended deadline of July 31, 2026 will apply to all appeals where the order being challenged was communicated to the appellant before May 1, 2026. Taxpayers falling under this category can file their appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal up to the notified date.
For orders communicated on or after May 1, 2026, the normal statutory timeline will apply, allowing appeals to be filed within three months from the date of communication of the order.
Timeline for Departmental Applications
The notification also covers applications filed by tax authorities. Applications relating to orders passed before February 1, 2026 may be filed before the Appellate Tribunal up to July 31, 2026.
For orders passed on or after February 1, 2026, the standard provision under Section 112(3) of the CGST Act will apply, permitting applications to be filed within six months from the date of the order.
Significance of the Notification
The latest notification is expected to provide additional time to taxpayers, businesses, and GST professionals who are awaiting appellate remedies before the GST Appellate Tribunal. With GSTAT gradually becoming operational across the country, the extended filing window ensures that eligible litigants do not lose their right to appeal due to procedural delays or uncertainty regarding tribunal functioning.
Tax experts believe the move will help streamline pending GST disputes and facilitate smoother access to appellate mechanisms under the GST framework.
