GST Intelligence Officer Honoured for Busting Rs 870 Crore Tax Evasion Racket

Last updated: 04 July 2025

Surajit Gogoi, Superintendent with the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Guwahati, has been awarded a prestigious Commendation Certificate for his outstanding role in exposing one of the largest tax evasion networks in India. The recognition was conferred during the 8th GST Day celebrations at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi, in the presence of Revenue Secretary Arvind Shrivastava and CBIC Chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal.

Gogoi's investigation uncovered a sophisticated racket involving fake invoicing and a web of shell companies that defrauded the exchequer of nearly Rs 870 crore in GST revenue. His meticulous and high-impact operation led to tax recoveries worth Rs 430 crore - marking one of the most successful enforcement actions by the DGGI in recent years.

Major Breakthrough in GST Enforcement

The probe conducted under Gogoi's leadership resulted in the arrest of five key individuals and exposed a deep-rooted network involving:

  • Forged business documents
  • Stolen identities and credentials
  • Multiple layers of non-existent firms created solely for generating bogus invoices

These fake firms were used to claim fraudulent input tax credits and launder illicit funds, causing a significant dent in government revenue collections.

National Recognition and Regional Pride

Officials at the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) lauded Gogoi's strategic acumen, describing his efforts as a "benchmark for GST intelligence enforcement." The commendation is also being celebrated as a proud moment for the Northeast, spotlighting the growing contribution of officers from the region in India's financial oversight framework.

"Gogoi's integrity and relentless pursuit of truth have helped not only in plugging critical revenue leakages but also in reinforcing public trust in India's indirect tax regime," said a senior CBIC official.

Strengthening the GST Ecosystem

The success of the investigation has prompted the DGGI to further tighten monitoring mechanisms for suspicious GST filings and input tax credit claims. The case is now being used as a learning module for new recruits in GST enforcement agencies across the country.

The 8th GST Day celebrations also recognized several other officers for their service, but Gogoi's commendation stood out as a symbol of individual excellence and systemic vigilance.
