"E-payment of taxes mandatory from January"

Chennai, (PTI): E-payment of taxes for corporates and tax-payers coming under the provision of Section 44AB would be mandatory from January 1 next, C R Ravichandran, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax said.

Speaking at an awareness programme on e-filing and e-payment of direct taxes here today,he said Tamil Nadu stood fourth in the All India level in e-filing of returns.

"e-payment of taxes will be operational from January 1,2008. The facility of e-payment of taxes will be offered by five banks namely SBI, UTI, IDBI, HDFC and Union Bank of India. Tax-payers need to have a net banking account with the bank who is authorised for providing e-payment facility."

The Department of Income Tax has set up a full-fledged Help Centre to help facilitate assessees in e-filing, trouble shooting and resolving problems related to e-filing.
