Three-month-old Orissa baby becomes youngest tax payer

Rourkela (Orissa), July 4: A three-month-old Orissa baby has become the
youngest individual to get a tax account number, after a trust signed a pact
with his father for him to work as a model.

Ayush Ranjan Rout of Rourkela was issued a Permanent Tax Account Number
(PAN) after his father applied for the card at the city's income tax
department.

Saroj Rout, Ayush's father, said he felt it was only right that his boy
should file his tax returns.

"Ayush will be modelling for an NGO and for that they will be paying him.
And as I and my wife both pay income tax, I feel my son too should pay
taxes. For that, I need a PAN card and so I applied for it," he said.

Ayush, who was born in March, was signed up by a voluntary organisation to
work as a model.

Dillip Agarwal, a tax consultant, said the card would ensure that the boy
gets a refund of any tax deducted while being remunerated during his
modelling assignment.

"His income and PAN card would help. Even if you have below taxable income,
then also you can get a PAN card. So, one should apply for a card, as
without it one cannot get return of income," said Agarwal.
