VDA income (crypto, NFTs, or any virtual digital asset as defined under Section 2(47A)) is taxed at a flat 30% under the new Income Tax Act , no slab rates, no deductions, no indexation.
For ITR-2 filing:
1. Report VDA transactions in Schedule VDA , this is a separate schedule added specifically for this income type.
2. Each transfer must be reported individually: date of acquisition, cost, date of transfer, consideration received, and profit/loss.
3. VDA losses cannot be set off against any other income (salary, capital gains, business income). They also cannot be carried forward to future years.
4. If your exchange has deducted TDS at 1% under Section 194S, that credit shows up in Form 26AS and can be claimed in your ITR.
If you received crypto as salary, gift, or airdrop, it is taxable at the market value on the date of receipt , and that value becomes your cost of acquisition for the future sale.
