The VAT % is fixed for all the states or it veries upon states. Here in Maharashtra it is 4%.

Is there any list from where we can get info how much in which stage? and rules abt to put on what goods or not?

Hi Apurva,

Rates of VAT are prescribed under the schedules of respective VAT Acts of different states and normaly catagorised as 1%,20%,4% and 12.5% .

Mainly two rates are apllicable to the most of the dealers which are 4% and 12.5% depend on the nature of products/goods in which we deal . on the items not covered in prescribed shedules general rates of 12.5% shall be applicable.

I have gone through the VAT Acts of almost 16 main states of India and the rates of VAT applicable in those states are almost similar for the catogory of goods . In case of WCT in some states general rate of 12.5% is applicable on the material portion of the contract and in rest of the states item wise rate i.e. 4% or 12.5% is applicable on the goods used in the work contracts except Jammu & Kashmir where the WORK CONTRACT ACT is separate and not merged with VAT ACT and rate of WCT is 8.4% . In almost states a comosition rate of VAT on WCT projects is also prescribed which is 8% in the state of maharashtra .

Hi Jain,

VAT percentage is not same in all the states.

Strictly speaking VAT rates should be same across the country.

But, in Indian VAT the same is not possible [For example, In North India Wheat will be consumed as main food item, whereas in south india its Rice and the vat rate will be different from each state].

Vat rates depends on VAT acts and schedules defined by each state. If you refer VAT Act related to that particular state, you will get the commodities and the rates.
