Tips on public speaking

Here are some important public speaking tips to help you develop your skills and become far more effective as a public speaker.

  • Ensure your speech will be captivating to your audience as well as worth their time and attention. Videotape your presentation and analyze it. Emphasize your strong points during your presentation.
  • Present the desired image to your audience. Be solemn if your topic is serious. Appear relaxed, even if you feel nervous. Remember, you don’t look as nervous as you feel.
  • Establish rapport with your audience. If a microphone is available, adjust and adapt your voice accordingly.
  • Maintain sincere eye contact with your audience. If what you have prepared is obviously not getting across to your audience, change your strategy mid-stream if you are well prepared to do so.
  • Allow yourself and your audience a little time to reflect and think.
  • Check out the location ahead of time to ensure seating arrangements for audience, whiteboard, blackboard, lighting, location of projection screen, sound system, etc. are suitable for your presentation.
  • Tell audience ahead of time that you will be giving out an outline of your presentation so that they will not waste time taking unnecessary notes during your presentation.
  • Humour : Tell jokes if you’re good at telling jokes. If you aren’t good, it is best to leave the jokes behind. There’s nothing worse than a punch line that has no punch.
  • Tell stories : Stories make you a real person not just a deliverer of information. Use personal experiences to bring your material to life. No matter how dry your material is, you can always find a way to humanise it. Keep audience interested throughout your entire presentation. Remember that an interesting speech makes time fly, but a boring speech is always too long to endure even if the presentation time is the same.
  • Using Public Speaking Environment – Try not to get stuck in one place. Use all the space that’s available to you. If your space is confined (say a meeting room or even presenting at a table) use stronger body language to convey your message.
  • Mistakes – Mistakes are all right. Recovering from mistakes makes you appear more human. Good recovery puts your audience at ease – they identify with you more.

nice article on public speaking bhargav....

adding to it i would say that while delievering ur speech, many a times it happens that our body starts shivering and our voice starts getting stuck in between....so to avoid that one should b well prepared and fluent with what he is going to say in between the masses....one should b able to confidently address the people in front of him....

Being confident and well versed in logical and fast thinking you can give speech at any time and any place, who may be your audiences. It is good to have an eye contact not only in public speaking but also in general day to day interaction with people. When you look into the eyes of the people, it shows courage and it means what you are saying you believe in and you are not lying. Above all think life is not only with this speech, life is many more, so don't be afraid, remember this world never listen to feeble people, so your voice should be bold and crystal clear, and learning the language is good but remember the language is for communication only, so use simple words. Be brave be Indian.

After a long tym u shared............

Nice n useful sharing Bhargav ji...............

We all keep dis point  in mind..................

very nice peice of work.... thanks for sharing......

Hai bhargav...nice article dude....

i want to add some more..if u dnt mind...

as priyanka said there may be some tension and fear while presenting a topic,so...to avoid that u can move all the available space and show some gestures which may help in showing some hand movement if u dnt get the exact words at that time...

moreover expressing is most imp than correctly expresing becoz doing mistake is human nature...so by practising one would improve his skills....

that's all wat i got into my mind when i read ur article...thanks for this wonderful post.

Thanking for sharing ..........

after a long time u have shared something Bhargav Sir anyways.........

as usual nice one...........

My first experience when I have to gave speech was the worst experience actually that was first time when I have to speak in front of the students of many schools and I'm totally frightened by seeing the huge crowd......

but that was first n last time when I'm frightened by speaking in front of many people.......

n after that I have lots of confidence in me......

the other experiences of presentations, speeches are just memorable ones.....

I just want to say that shivering of body, forgetting the speech is not a big thing, it's common normally happens with most of the people......

but as per my experiences once u have developed confidence in urself, ones u have spoken infront of people......

the all fear, shiver everything has gone....

just keep in mind that whatever u are going to deliver is correct and people will get something from it......

Thanx for the sharing Sir.........

Thank you Bhargav for the wonderful write up ...Public speaking is hard for many people.

Very nice post sir....

all points are important in speaking in front of people... one should also be good at expressions... lyk hand moments,, eye brow lifting, nodding of head and lot more... a talk without expessions is dull...

moreover be confident while talking... dont let the fact that u are addressing huge audiance for the first tym.... preparing fr the speach in front of the mirror has helped me alot in pointing out the flaws in me while i talk... I took this concept from the life of US President Mr. Lincoln... and believe me its the best way to prepare ur self fr a speach..........

hi komal

Thanks for your veiws on this post ! I want to add one more thing in your talk so it is compalet , one must know something special and in detail knowledge of the topic which is taken by him.. If any one asking and if you dont know then your confidence level gone down.. so It will also effect to whole topic where you are master bt lake of confidence you cant speak out with that must effective..so gain max knowdlege of the topic..
