Singhania's book is a standard textbook. if u want to focus on exam based prepartion then surely go for Padhukas publication of Income Tax, Service Tax and VAT for PCC written by G.Shekar. ecah and every chapter has been framed in such way tat once after reading a particular concept it is immediatly followed by a practical application oriented problem which has been asked in the previous year  exams. u r also dedicted an exclusive section called FAST TRACK REFERENCER which has the total gist which is most suitable for revision before exams.this book is a good companion for self prepartion.
