Tax on EPF withdrawal after age 60

Tax queries 234 views 2 replies

I withdrew EPF in June 2020 when my age was 60+, EPFO deducted TDS @ 10% even though I had provided form 15H.  No satisfactory answers came on filing queries on EPFO portal. It was peak Covid-19 time so I had no option to personally visit their office. The query responses mentioned lockdown etc and that I could claim refund of TDS in the ITR.

The EPF  was accumulated between 2013 and 2017. I left that company in 2017 and didn't opt for PF in my next company.
My understanding was that EPF withdrawal after completing 5 years of service or after age 60 was exempt from income tax.
kindly advise the correct position

As you did not complete 5 years of service/s in one EPF account, it is taxable, and the TDs can be claimed in ITR.

My service period is from 02.03.2009 to 31.5.2014 i.e. more than 5 yrs. I am now above 60 years. If I withdraw whole balance of EPF ( becasue it has stopped earning interest also) , will it be tax free?
