After reading the above comments, my opinion is that in the matter of humour, we can't control ourselves. Rather one should be happy that a particular community can relax others.
.
To make my point clear - suppose I start one joke with the following words :
.
Ek Sardar Tha.
.
(then I take a pause).
.
It is sure that people will amused the moment I utter : Ek Sardar Tha.
.
In practical life; nobody has seen that a Sardar is not respected.
.
( Respect Nahi Karke Apni Battisi Tudwani Hai Kya )?
.
People make jokes on a particular community due to their established brands. People of North get amused with pronunciation of Hindi words by Madrasi and Bengali.
.
Still there are ways to please all : Use Santa - Banta in place of a Sardar.
.
OK ?
.
( Nobody can presume that Santa is a Marwadi, Bengali or Madrasi ).
.
Santa & Banta is now established brand for humour.
.
In Gujarat, Karshan Kadka and Juharmal Marwadi are famous characters in humour section.
.
Osho used one particular character for humour : Mulla Naseeruddin !
.
I have my own brand - pending registration !!
