We have taken a registration for the Service Tax and paying the same monthly. My Query is if there is no Service Tax for a Particular Period, then should one has to file a NIL return for the same? If one does not file the same what would be the consequences for the same.

If you file nil return you have to pay the penalty which is from Rs 5000 to rs20000. However if the return is nil then the officer may reduce your penlaty amount completely or partially which is pratically not possible. So better to file nil return and why to take risk.
Thanks Hitesh, Can you please explain the first line, if we have not provided any service for themonth of Dec. 2014, Hence no service tax for that Month so my question was should one has to file a NIL return for the month of Dec.2014?
Bavesh, service tax return we do half yearly not monthly I.e Apr-Sep & Oct - Mar so you have to mandatorily submit return (ST3) for Oct - Mar15

Service tax return is filed half yearly not question of in a month service not provided. and it has be to filed at time even nil return. If return not filed then maximum penalty Rs.20000.00.
However in case of NIL return, Assessing Officer can reduce or waive the penalty.
Thanks Araf, Now I got cleared my doubts, now as we have already registred with Service Tax. Now I want to know regarding payment of Service Tax.Suppose if we do not have rendered any service during the month of dec.2014, so in that case there would not be any payment, am I right?.should we have to make a nil payment for this.
when no any services provided, then why payment of service tax.
