Service tax on speed post being coll. by postal dept.

Service Tax is being collected by Postal Dept. On the receipt they indicate Taxes 4.00 i.e ? much is tax portion in the total bill.

To the best of my knowledge Postal Dept. is exempted from collecting Tax...this is by a specific notifiction.

Now my ? is when it is exempted first it should not collect. Secondly O.k when it has collected it is supposed to have remitted to service tax dept. There is no sign of it.

Kindly note that most of the services provided by Govt. are exempt except few. And this FEW included speed post service, which is taxable.

I think speed post services are chargeable to service tax..

If so ? is the Service Tax No...........

Is Service Tax No not linked to PAN No. ......?

How postal Dept. can obtain PAN No. when its income is not taxable.........

Services Provided by Government or Local

Authority:

Most of the services provided by the Central or State

Government or Local authorities are in the negative

list except the following:

a) Services provided by the Department of Posts by

way of speed post, express parcel post, life insurance

and agency services carried out on payment of

commission on non government business;

b) Services in relation to a vessel or an aircraft inside

or outside the precincts of a port or an airport;

c) Transport of goods and/or passengers;

d) Support services, other than those covered by

clauses (a) to (c) above, to business entities

Sir, It's o.k.

Is it not necessart that they should provide ST Regn. No. when they are collecting.

Secondly are they paying this amount to the Service Tax Dept.

Thirdly the !!! is when they are squeezing the other assessees with a penalty for every day.....delay in paying and in filing.....
