Section 80DD Deduction Filing Error

321 views 6 replies

While filing my Income Tax Return (ITR-1) for the Assessment Year 2025–26, I attempted to claim a deduction under Section 80DD in respect of my dependent son, who has been certified with 90% permanent disability (Autism Spectrum Disorder with Severe Mental Retardation).

I duly submitted Form 10-IA online on 15th June 2025. The acknowledgement number for the form either auto-populates or can be manually entered in the 80DD Schedule.

However, after entering the details in the 80DD Schedule  and Clicking the save button, I encountered the following error message:

"Acknowledgement number of Form 10IA filed for self and dependent can't be same. Please provide proper acknowledgment."

I would like to clarify that Form 10-IA has been filed solely for my disabled son, and not for myself. There is no duplication or incorrect selection from my end.

In view of the above, I am unable to proceed with the return filing due to this persistent error.

1.     Is this a known technical issue with the Income Tax portal?

2.     Is there any corrective step required from my side to resolve this?

Ensure that Form 10-IA was submitted correctly and solely for the dependent son, not for the taxpayer themselves. The acknowledgement number should be unique and not duplicated.

2. Confirm that the acknowledgement nuber entered in the 80DD  Schedule is accurate and matches the one received upon subission of Form 10-IA.

3.Contact income tax department helpline.

4.Review Tax Filing Portal: Sometimes, portals have known issues or maintenance schedules that could be causing the problem.

I discovered that Schedule 80U—which was not applicable in my case—was creating a conflict. After deleting the 80U schedule, I was able to successfully submit my return without any further issues.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Could you please clarify what you mean by “deleting Schedule 80U”?

In my case, I have not selected Section 80U at all, since I am filing only for my dependent (father) under Section 80DD. Still, I am getting the error:
“Acknowledgement number of Form 10IA filed for self and Dependent can’t be same. Please provide proper acknowledgement number.”

It looks like the portal is automatically creating a conflict even though 80U is not selected on my end. Has anyone faced this issue, and is there a workaround or fix for it? Would really appreciate any guidance on resolving this.

Hi everyone, I wanted to clarify something about Form 10-IA and its usage year to year.

My father's disability is permanent (certificate states "non-progressive, will not improve, reassessment not recommended"). I filed Form 10-IA correctly for AY 2024–25, and submitted it again for AY 2025–26 using the same medical certificate.

My question: Do I need to file Form 10-IA every year even if the disability is permanent, or can I reuse the same acknowledgement number each year instead of refiling?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

If the disability certificate mentions “permanent / non-progressive / reassessment not recommended”, then Form 10-IA is required to be filed only once at the time of the first claim.

You do not need to re-file Form 10-IA every year. The same acknowledgement and certificate remain valid for subsequent years, unless:

  • the certificate itself has an expiry date, or

  • the Income Tax Department specifically asks you to resubmit.

So in your case, since you already have a permanent UDID certificate and a valid Form 10-IA acknowledgement, you can simply use it year after year without re-filing. Just keep the documents safely for records.

"I faced the same issue as you.

I had also filed Form 10-IA for claiming the 80DD deduction for my disabled son. I noticed that in the Deduction section, all deductions are auto-populated. In my case, 80U was also auto-populated, which created a conflict on the portal even though I had not selected it.

To resolve this, go to the Deduction section, first delete 80U, and then claim 80DD.
