Schedule EI - PPF, EPF, Sukanya interest

561 views 6 replies

HI,

When filing the returns, there is a section of Schedule EI in ITR2 for Exempt income. What all types of interest are expected to be filled here? PPF interest, EPF interest, Sukanya Samruddhi Interest, any other interest to be filled?

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Schedule EI (Exempt Income) in your Income Tax Return (ITR) is the designated section for reporting income that is not chargeable to tax under the Income Tax Act. While this income is not added to your total taxable income, it is essential to disclose it for transparency and compliance purposes.

Interest to Report in Schedule EI

Generally, you should report interest earned from tax-exempt government-backed schemes here. Specifically:

  • PPF (Public Provident Fund) Interest: The interest earned on PPF is exempt from tax under Section 10(11). It should be reported in this schedule.

  • Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana (SSY) Interest: Interest earned on SSY is exempt under Section 10(11A) and should be reported here.

  • EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) Interest: This is generally tax-exempt; however, there is a limit. If your contribution to the EPF exceeds ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year (or ₹5 lakh if there is no employer contribution), the interest earned on the excess contribution is taxable. You do not report the exempt portion as "exempt income" if it is taxable, but the portion that remains tax-free is typically considered under the exempt category.

  • Other Exempt Income: This may include agricultural income, scholarships, or other income specifically exempt under the Income Tax Act.

Important Notes

  • Purpose: Reporting these in Schedule EI ensures your financial records are consistent with your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and helps avoid unnecessary scrutiny from the Income Tax Department.

  • Taxable vs. Exempt: Always double-check if any portion of your interest has become taxable due to specific limits (like the EPF contribution rule mentioned above). If it is taxable, it must be reported under "Income from Other Sources" rather than Schedule EI.

  • Consultation: Tax laws, especially regarding provident fund interest thresholds, can change. If you have significant investments or are unsure about a specific entry, it is advisable to consult with a tax professional or review the latest ITR instructions provided on the official Income Tax e-filing portal.

Summary

Schedule EI is used to report income that is not subject to tax, such as interest from PPF and Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana. While these earnings are tax-free, they must be disclosed in this schedule for compliance. Note that EPF interest is only exempt up to a specific annual contribution limit (typically ₹2.5 lakh for employees); interest on contributions exceeding this limit is taxable and should be reported as "Income from Other Sources."

Thanks for the response. However if we have to show the interest from PF which Sub-category needs to be selected?

Declare it u/s. 10(11) IT act...

I am confused with same query. I did ask question on this Forum. https://www.caclubindia.com/forum/schedule-ei-for-itr1-615511.asp and also in https://www.caclubindia.com/experts/itr-1-details-for-showing-exempt-income-2961354.asp discussion it suggest something else.

Again I appreciate both @ Aashok Kumar Sharma and @ Dhirajlal Rambhia to answer query on this platform.

PPF I put under 10(11) . But NSS (1989)  I selected  "other" in drop down and CBDT  notification in descripttion.  I hope it is ok

Yes.... correct...
