Can one get the input credit against the sales return in the month of August'17 ?where the sales took place in the month of May'17.

For the B2B sales during VAT regime and sales return in GST regime.
The party returning goods have to raise GST invoice on you and you have to inward as purchase.
Nothing to do with VAT liability or claim now.
